ANCHORAGE – The Alaska Volcano Observatory says there have been flight cancellations in Nome and Bethel, due to affected air travel after a volcanic eruption in Russia.
Russia’s Kamchatka Volcanic Eruption Response Team notified the Alaska Observatory of the eruption just after 4 p.m. Friday afternoon.
KVERT has issued an orange aviation color code after the Shiveluch Volcano eruption.
“Explosive-extrusive eruption of the volcano continues,” according to the KVERT website.
Scientists are also observing ash explosions up to 32,800 feet.
That ash is moving from the Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia toward Alaska air space, the observatory says.
The Anchorage Volcano Ash Advisory Center is monitoring the ash’s movement. According to the most recent advisory, the ash has shifted over Alaska and may be headed toward Canada.
This is a developing story.
“According to the most recent advisory, the ash has shifted over Alaska and may be headed toward Canada.”
Or further south, maybe?
