A Georgia high school was brought to a standstill last week after a 10th grade student brought a Confederate flag with him to class.
The incident occurred last Wednesday at Rockmart High School in Polk County and lead to a lockdown.
The student – a white male – arrived at the school with the flag strapped to his backpack and walked through the cafeteria.
Two black male students took issue with the flag and then confronted the boy about it in the courtyard.
‘They wanted to confront him about what he had on his back pack. What did they say? Hey man why you doing that,’ Principal Wesley Cupp told Fox 5.
After exchanging words the three students got into a struggle.
They were pushing and shoving each other, Cupp said.
However staff at the school were able to break it up before the fight became too serious.
The student with the battle flag was searched and no weapon was found, Cupp said.
All three were suspended for disruptive behavior.
However the situation escalated when rumors started swirling that a group of other students were going to bring their own Confederate flags.
The principal decided the safest approach was to place the school on lockdown.
Students were told to stay in their classrooms until officials were confident the campus was safe.
‘We just did that as a precautionary situation to help maintain and control what could have been a bad situation,’ Cupp said.
Parents have said they support the way Cupp handled the situation.
