WTHR – by Steve JeffersonINDIANAPOLIS – Metro Police are investigating brutal attack on a 67-year-old Indianapolis woman left with serious injuries to her eye and face.
The attack happened around 7:00 Sunday night during an attempted carjacking in the 200 Block of Randolph Street.
Kay Kise pulled up to her home and parked her van out front in the reserve handicapped parking space. The space is marked with two signs posted curbside.
While gathering her belongings, a teenager approached Kise outside her van.
“He come up to my car and he said, ‘Do you know where Hendricks Place is?’” said Kise. “I told him it was just two blocks over and continued grabbing my shopping bags. The next thing you know, I turned back around and he had this gun right in my face.”
Kise now believes the question was just a distraction because now she recalls seeing two other men walking down the street about the same time.
The man with the gun started demanding the keys to her van, according to the 67-year-old grandmother.
Kise said, “’You are not getting the keys to my car.’ He said, ‘I said give me the keys to that car,’ and I shook that gun out of my face and I said, ‘You are not taking my car.’ I said, ‘I have not had it that long and you are not getting it’.”
That’s when a brief struggle started outside the van. Kise suffered several blows to the face and head, but she does not remember getting hit. During the struggle, she screamed several times for help. Her screams got the attention of her 13-year-old next door neighbor Shantel Johnson.
After looking out the window, Shantel noticed her elderly neighbor outside her van.
“So I went down to see what was wrong, and her face was bleeding and it was swollen,” said Johnson. “So I ran back upstairs and I was like, ‘Mom, Mrs. Kay is hurt! Mrs Kay is hurt!’”
The Johnsons called 911, but by the time officers could get on the scene, the three suspects were long gone.
They did not get away with the van they tried to carjack from Kise. She has only had the van since this summer. She drove a Ford Focus but it was totaled in a car crash after Kise was hit by another driver, she says.
Kise said officers also called paramedics to treat her for the eye and face injuries. They convinced her to go to the hospital to get checked out for internal injuries.
“I don’t hurt nobody,” said Kise, “and I don’t understand why the children would hurt me.”
Shantel Johnson said, “She is a good neighbor, a very good neighbor, she is very sweet.”
The 67-year-old hopes someone will help bring her attackers to justice by anonymously calling Crime Stoppers at (317) 262-TIPS (8477).

Another good reason for elderly or handicapped people to arm themselves. These are the folks most vulnerable to thugs..
