Hunter S. Thompson’s Prescient 1972 Warning

Liberty Blitzkrieg – by Michael Krieger

While on the campaign trail in 1972, Hunter S. Thompson issued a dire warning that is more true today than it ever has been.

He warned us about what would happen to the country if we continued along the destructive path he noticed nearly 45 years ago. He observed that if Americans continued to accept “lesser of two evilism” the only thing we’d end up with would be increased evil.

He was right.

Here’s the quote:

That’s the real issue this time,” he said. “Beating Nixon.  It’s hard to even guess how much damage those bastards will do if they get in for another four years.”

The argument was familiar, I had even made it myself, here and there, but I was beginning to sense something very depressing about it.  How many more of these goddamn elections are we going to have to write off as lame, but “regrettably necessary” holding actions?  And how many more of these stinking double-downer sideshows will we have to go through before we can get ourselves straight enough to put together some kind of national election that will give me and the at least 20 million people I tend to agree with a chance to vote for something, instead of always being faced with that old familiar choice between the lesser of two evils?

Now with another one of these big bogus showdowns looming down on us, I can already pick up the stench of another bummer.  I understand, along with a lot of other people, that the big thing this year is Beating Nixon.  But that was also the big thing, as I recall, twelve years ago in 1960 – and as far as I can tell, we’ve gone from bad to worse to rotten since then, and the outlook is for more of the same.

—Hunter S. Thompson, Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ’72

This above quote came to my attention courtesy of an article published at Counterpunch titled: Stop Trump! Stop Clinton!! Stop the Madness (and Let Me Get Off)!

Wish you were still with us.

  1. If you’ve never read “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas” it is quite a wild ride. The movie was OK but the book took you pretty deep.

He didn’t spare “Darth” Cheney either. He was quite the critic and, who knows, the “Bush Family Evil Empire” has quite an interesting list of dead bodies floating in their wake. Bush didn’t like anyone who besmirched his family with the truth. The Bushes wouldn’t have anyone killed for their gain, would they? They’re upstanding citizens, just “poor country folk, barely kept the family fed, then one day he was shootin’ at some food, and up through the ground come a bubblin’ crude. Oil that is, Texas tea.

Goddamned F’n Bushes. They snookered us all. 911, all staged by Cheney and his warhawks, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, and the rest of the lot, “there’s oil in them there hills in Iraq, it’s mine, all mine.”

Could the treason be any more obvious without the blatant misinformation our main stream media pukes out. Media complicity in this treason will be addressed, and proper hangings will occur for all those deserving. It’s only a matter of time, but that snowball’s gettin’ bigger as it’s rollin’ down the hill.

    1. oil doesn’t mean ‘sugar’
look at the 7 non ME nations that (had, US rolled them already) have no central bank ending with Iran – Syria is the last step

      Banksters rule the world

  2. “That’s the real issue this time,” he said. “Beating Nixon.”

    Why?

“It’s hard to even guess how much damage those bastards will do if they get in for another four years.”

No more (or less) than the other half of the false left-right paradigm.

    Was he truly that clueless?

  3. Another alleged “suicide”, but when they found the .45 auto he allegedly used for the task, it had a full clip, and there was no round in the chamber.

(if he shot himself, the gun would have chambered the next round)

He’s another guy who paid the ultimate price for telling too much truth.

    1. Thank You, Jolly Roger, for that nacent piece of the puzzle I had been denied, up to now. The day Hunter’s alleged “suicide” was reported, my gut told me that the Father of Gonzo-Journalism was Gary Webbed. But what you are recounting it a factoid I have never heard before. Do recall where you heard it? Thanks in advance.

      1. “More confusion has arisen after a quote from one of the police officers investigating the death scene. Deputy Ron Ryan said there was a spent shell casing, but there was no cartridge in the firing chamber, as there should have been under normal circumstances. Sheriff’s officer DiSalvo confirmed this opinion; ‘I think a bullet from the magazine should have cycled into the chamber’ ”

You’re very welcome, Joe Avg from Pennsyltucky.

  4. “Very interesting”, said Sargent Schulz. No cartridge in the firing chamber? Well, Sherlock, what do you think? Maybe aliens abducted the gun momentarily and removed the empty shell casing from the firing chamber. “Yep, that’s my story and I’m stickin’ to it!” Hey, did you hear? Lady Gaga is a guy.
