Illinois schools can demand students’ social media logins

The Week – by Bonnie Kristian

A new anti-cyberbullying law in Illinois effectively allows schools to force students to hand over their social media passwords if they are suspected to have been the victim of or otherwise involved in cyberbullying. While the law doesn’t explicitly say schools can request passwords, it gives school officials broad scope to act even when alleged bullying occurs using “technology or an electronic device that is not owned, leased, or used by a school district or school.”

According to a letter to parents obtained by Motherboard, school authorities are interpreting the law to mean that they can require students or their parents to provide passwords “if school authorities have reasonable cause to believe that a student’s account on a social networking website contains evidence that a student has violated a school disciplinary rule or procedure.”

Some parents and students alike have expressed dismay at the law’s invasion of privacy. “It’s one thing for me to take my child’s social media account and open it up, or for the teacher to look or even a child to pull up their social media account,” said parent Sara Bozarth, “but to have to hand over your password and personal information is not acceptable to me.” Bonnie Kristian

  1. IF and thats a big if…

If my kid went to the public fool system..I would school the child on never giving out any personal information like this,, and how you do it is be smarter then the A-hole asking for this information by telling them you dont have a social media account ..problem solved .. now was that so hard?

    also

anyone who has kids on social media using their name , are idiots

and that is how your going to be able to say your kids arnt on any social media ..

because their screen name isnt their name .. its something like this

234myway is a good screen name.. catch my drift?

WTF??? It’s none of their business. It’s their own private information. They want to do the same thing that employers want to do, which is to spy on you when you call off work or are not around in order to see if you are playing hooky or if you are saying something bad against the company.

I’m sick of this shit. That’s why since 2009, I’ve never touched Facebook, Myspace, Twitter or any social networking site ever. It’s nothing but a snitch and spy wire. Even if it is private, the bastards will find a way to check your account. Even employers are asking for it before they hire you in order to find out more about you. It’s NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS!! All of these places are breaching the 4th Article to the Bill of Rights and they don’t even care. Typical.

  3. “…if they are suspected to have been the victim of or otherwise involved in cyberbullying.”

And what, pray tell, could POSSIBLY raise such a suspicion?

Someone with an agenda, or a grudge. Ex-boyfriend/girlfriend maybe?

    Buncha commie cr@p!!!
