The exercise tested and surveyed emergency management skills and operations when responding to an event of this nature.
Scenarios involving active shooters are necessary because they give Airmen the sense of realism that helps prepare when responding in the event of a real-world situation.
“People aren’t exposed to this kind of thing very often,” said Michael Feckner, manager of the Wing Inspection Team. “[Because it] doesn’t happen often, when it does, it can be very traumatic because it’s not in the forefront of their minds.”
According to the Department of Homeland Security, the profile of an active shooter includes an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area; in most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection of victims.
For some, they have never experienced the smell, sound or look of ammunition and gunfire so this type of training is helpful.
Feckner said the feedback he received from those involved in this exercise was positive. The participants have a better understanding of what they should do if something like this actually happened.
DHS also provided the following practices for coping with an active shooter situation:
· Be aware of the environment and any possible dangers.
· Take note of the two nearest exits in any facility.
· If in an office, stay there and secure the door.
· If in a hallway, get into a room and secure the door.
· As a last resort, attempt to take the active shooter down. When the shooter is at
close range and fleeing is not an option, the chance of survival is much greater when taking them down.
“These exercises are vital in remaining prepared and vigilant,” said Feckner. “Training builds proficiency; evaluating that training allows us to identify and correct weaknesses and build greater proficiency.”

“People aren’t exposed to this kind of thing very often,” said Michael Feckner, manager of the Wing Inspection Team.”
“So we’re here to make sure that they do.” he added.
“According to the Department of Homeland Security, the profile of an active shooter includes…
… ANYONE who disagrees with ANYTHING the so-called ‘government’ says or does.”
“Or isn’t a Mason, communist or jew, for that matter.” he concluded.
