You misunderstand the lyrics. This is about a man laying a woman, and when he is talking about gimme back my bullets, he is talking about a different kind of bullets. 🙂
Had no chance to do that, Henry. I was never a fan, never heard the lyrics (or never really paid attention if I did), so my comment was strictly based on the song title alone.
According to Lynyrd Skynyrd guitarist Gary Rossington in a 1992 Goldmine interview, this song is about the bullets Billboard charts use to signify a song is moving quickly up the chart. If a song is “#12 with a bullet,” it is at #12 but will probably go higher next week. Skynyrd had not had a hit in a while and this was a message that they wanted to get back on the charts.
Okay, I have no evidence to the contrary of that which I spoke. It was told to me by a bassist I was jamming with back east when I was about 15 or 16 years old. It was a great song, but I truly cannot stand to listen to it as it was a song in one of our sets for a band that I played drums in for 20 years. I played it and heard it too many times.
If you have seen this interview, I stand corrected and the Republic is saved. 🙂
One question Lynyrd:
WHY’D YOU GIVE ‘EM UP IN THE FIRST PLACE?????
