Mid-Range Assassin’s Rifle

The .22 Winchester Magnum Rimfire, also called .22 WMR.22 Magnum.22 MRF, or .22 Mag, is a rimfire cartridge. Originally loaded with a bullet weight of 40 grains (2.6 g) delivering velocities in the 2,000 feet per second (610 m/s) range from a rifle barrel, .22 WMR is now loaded with bullet weights ranging from 50 grains (3.2 g) at 1,530 feet per second (470 m/s) to 30 grains (1.9 g) at 2,200 feet per second (670 m/s). Accuracy around 1 MOA is achievable. Compared to the faster but lighter .17 HMR, the .22 WMR impacts targets with higher kinetic energy within its effective range, important for clean kills on larger small game such as coyote, albeit with a less flat-shooting bullet arc.

  1. A TOTAL BAD ASS AT 125 YARDS…………. CHEAP, LOW MAGNIFICATION WIDE ANGLE SCOPE, BOLT ACTION RIFLE, (THINK SAVAGE) SOMETHING TO PROP ON AND PLENTY OF AMMO………..
    VARMINTS AINT GOT A CHANCE………………….

  2. 22 mag will ricochet. 17HMR turns to powder. A 17HMR will burn through 1/8″ of cast iron when the soft lead of a 22mag will bounce off. After the 17 penetrates the cast iron it explodes to dust. It’s a velocity game. 17HMR is common. 22 mag has become rare plus it’s crazy expensive.

Buy a practice grenade from army surplus. Hang it off a chain. Shoot it with a 22mag and then a 17 at 50 yards. Take notice of the bullet splatter mark of the 22 on the surface compared to the blasted hole made by the 17.

    1. WOULDNT ANTI MATERIEL BE 6MM OR LARGER?
VELOCITY ISNT THE ONLY GAME IN TOWN. PROJECTILE MASS AND WEIGHT ALSO PLAYS A HUGE PART IN THE ART OF LONG RANGE KILLING………A ..22 MAG IS NOT SUITABLE FOR SHOOTING GRENADES…
BUT I COULD DROP A COMMIE WITH IT CONSISTENTLY AT 100 YARDS OR SO…………………
AS FAST AS I COULD WORK THE BOLT MAN………

      1. One of my favorite guns I have is a .22 mag. I shoot the Hornady ballistic tips in it. At 100 yards, I could hit the brass on a 12 gauge shot gun shell every shot.
My son has a .17. He shoots the Hornady ballistic tips too. Up to 200 yards, I’ll take a deer in the ear every shot with either one of them.
        Just my opinion.

        1. MY FAVORITE WAS THE HORNADY BT 100 GRAIN, HAND LOADED IN .243 FIRED OUT OF A RUGER MK 5 BOLT ACTION BULL BARREL
SO YEP. HORNADY MAKES A DAMN FINE BULLET…… I SHOT AN DOE ONE TIME ABOUT 300 YARDS IN THE HEAD. SHE LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE TOOK A HATCHET TO HER HEAD………………
BUT YOU DON’T HAVE TO LISTEN TO ME, RETIRED GUNSMITHS ARE ALL BASICALLY DUMBASSES……

          1. Oh, but I am listening, o wise one.
My first big bore was a .243 Winchester. I put a void in the force with that rifle.

          2. “… HORNADY MAKES A DAMN FINE BULLET……”

DAMN SURE OUGHTA BE… THEY CHARGE ENOUGH FOR ‘EM!!!

  3. Like the 22 a lot for cost
    And plinking
It no doubt is very accurate

My love comes at .300win mag 165gr or 180 if you like the punch ( mine has a Muzzle Brake)
And well over 1/2 a mile of who’s yer daddy

When you wanna reach out and touch someone, ma bell ain’t got nothin on the long distance call

    1. +GREAT ROUND, GREAT REACH, AS LONG AS YOUR NOT TRYING TO KILL 30, ONE RIGHT AFTER THE OTHER….
      OWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

  4. I still own the Winchester 22 mag lever action I bought new in 1972. Have slayed many a woodchuck with it! Wonderfully accurate to about 125 meters. It’s got good knock at 100 and can do damage that a LR just can’t.

  5. I like the 22wmr and own one. Its a good round and can defeat 3a body armor at 25ft.
However the 17hmr is reloadable and a more reliable auto feeder in semi auto.

Ill probably not buy either again.
The fn 5.7 wins. In that size category. To include .223/5.56nato.

    1. No 22mag cannot penetrate level 3 armor. 17hmr is a rimfire. It can’t be reloaded and 5.7 ballistics are sadly close to 22mag. Was this a late night drinking post? I dare you to reload a 17hmr. Post pictures.
