Nearly 1 million people encountered at Mexican border over past 12 months

Washington Examiner – by Anna Giaritelli

Nearly 1 million people arrived at the U.S. border with Mexico and were encountered by law enforcement over the past 12 months, marking a major spike from any year in the past decade, the country’s top border official announced Tuesday.

Just under 980,000 people were encountered at the U.S.-Mexico border in fiscal 2019, which ran from Oct. 1, 2018 through Sept. 30, 2019, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection, which handles all border and trade affairs. A total 521,090 people were encountered along the southern border in fiscal 2018.

Encounters, which include contact with those who illegally crossed and those who were turned away for lack of documentation at ports of entry, are an indicator of how many people tried to illegally cross into the country.

“This is a staggering 88% higher than the number of enforcement actions in 2018,” acting CBP Commissioner Mark Morgan said during a press conference at the White House Tuesday morning. “These numbers are numbers that no immigration system in the world is designed to handle, including ours.”

Morgan said officials believe another 150,000 people eluded being caught while crossing in fiscal 2019.

The majority of those encountered illegally crossed into the United States, meaning they did not present themselves at a port of entry to claim asylum but went through rivers and over land to get into the country. Border Patrol agents who work in the land between ports apprehended or arrested approximately 851,000 people in all of fiscal 2019 — the highest number of arrests in 12 years, the Washington Examiner reported last week.

The remaining 128,000 tried to enter the U.S. at a port of entry but were turned away by CBP’s Office of Field Operations officers at those ports.

Morgan said 52,000 people were encountered in the month of September. The number of people encountered at the border has dropped each of the four consecutive months, down 65% in September from the peak in May of 144,000.

Morgan did not share the number of people within that 979,154 figure who claimed asylum or legal protection from being sent back to their home country.

Those encountered both at official crossing points and between them this year were predominantly families. The number of families who arrived in fiscal 2019 was triple that of the second-highest year.

  1. The invasion continues without a hitch and in greater numbers. Looks like Americans don’t know what property is cuz if they did they’d be fuming mad and actually repelling these invaders that have been told that if they can get here, they can have the property that belongs to Americans.

  2. THE “POPE” AND THE REST OF THE SANHEDRIN RUB THEIR HANDS TOGETHER WITH GLEE AS AMERICA BEGINS TO RESEMBLE A DRIED UP PRUNE

  3. “This is a staggering 88% higher than the number of enforcement actions in 2018,”

They weren’t being paid by Soros to come here last year (maybe close to the end of it).

“Those encountered both at official crossing points and between them this year were predominantly families.”
