Our nation has suffered too much at the hands of dangerous people who use guns to commit horrific acts of violence. As President Obama said following the Sandy Hook Elementary School tragedy, “We won’t be able to stop every violent act, but if there is even one thing that we can do to prevent any of these events, we have a deep obligation, all of us, to try.”
Most gun owners are responsible and law-abiding, and they use their guns safely. The President strongly believes that the Second Amendment guarantees an individual right to bear arms. But to better protect our children and our communities from tragic mass shootings like those in Newtown, Aurora, Oak Creek, and Tucson, there are common-sense steps we can take right now.

A man who recently returned from West Africa with symptoms consistent with the Ebola virus is being tested for the disease in New York City, where he was admitted to a hospital early this morning, officials said.
The man presented at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan with a high fever and gastrointestinal problems, officials said. Authorities wouldn’t identify the man or the country he had been to and the reasons for his visit. He is currently undergoing tests to determine the cause of his symptoms. Continue reading “Mt. (AJ)The UN’s food agency is warning that fruit bats, common in stews in West Africa, are likely to spread the disease.
As the death toll from the world’s deadliest-ever Ebola outbreak surged past 600 in West Africa, the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) warned West Africans to stay away from certain popular wildlife species that are thought to carry the disease. Former White House Press Secretary James Brady, who was famously shot during the attempt on then-President Ronald Reagan’s life in 1981, has died. He was 73.

After Officer Darren Ilardi fatally struck 24-year-old Ryo Oyamada with his police cruiser in Queensbridge last year, the NYPD purposefully destroyed evidence, failed to properly investigate the crash, and engaged in a “cover-up,” according to a set of recently filed court documents.
Officers responding to the scene dispersed all eyewitnesses, failed to measure skid marks, and did not check Ilardi’s cell phone records to determine if he was using his phone when he struck the 24-year-old student outside a deli near the intersection of 40th Avenue and 10th Street, the filings claim. The total federal debt of the U.S. government has now increased more than $7 trillion during the slightly more than five and a half years Barack Obama has been president.
That is more than the debt increased under all U.S. presidents from George Washington through Bill Clinton combined, and it is more debt than was accumulated in the first 227 years of this nation’s existence–from 1776 through 2003. On Monday, legislation creating “Gun Violence Restraining Orders” for California will be heard by the Senate Appropriations Committee.
The measure–AB 1014–is sponsored by Assembly members Nancy Skinner (D-15) and Das Williams (D-37).

HOUSTON, Texas — Several unaccompanied minors who entered the U.S. illegally have been relocated to and released where many U.S. citizens cannot afford to bring their own families on vacation: the Virgin Islands.
Subsequent to being caught illegally crossing the Texas-Mexico border, more than 30,000 unaccompanied minors have been released by federal agents in states across the U.S. While the majority of the minors have been set free in large states like Texas, Virginia, and California, a Health and Human Services (HHS) document shows that four were set free in the U.S. Virgin Islands.
