NEW YORK—Sergio Consuerga, the good Samaritan who intervened in the vicious beating of a man in Washington Heights on Sunday, Sept. 29, used the wisdom he gained from martial arts to turn away the attackers.

Consuerga, a father of 10 and a longtime Washington Heights resident, was already late to church when a friend and a relative stopped him on the corner of West 178th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. The 21-year-old student from Georgia was citedin multiple articles as being one of the few, the proud, the successful to signed up for insurance through a federal exchange.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture warned the public on Monday about a salmonella outbreak traced to Foster Farms chicken.

The agency said nearly 280 illnesses in 18 states had been traced to raw poultry from three Foster Farms facilities in  California. The chicken was distributed mainly to stores in Oregon, Washington and California.
