More than two dozen types of salads and wraps sold nationwide at Trader Joe’s and Walgreens may contain parasites, officials warn.
The products, distributed by Indianapolis-based Caito Foods, were found to be contaminated with cyclospora, which causes ‘explosive diarrhea’ up to six weeks after consuming it.
It is the same parasite which has sickened more than 200 McDonald’s customers across the country after they ate the chain’s salads.
All of the items identified in the new USDA report contained beef, pork and/or chicken – but it is the lettuce that officials are worried about.
The Cyclospora parasite causes cyclosporiasis, characterized by vomiting and ‘explosive’ diarrhea a week or even more than a month after eating the offending food.
The USDA says Caito Foods was notified from their lettuce supplier, Fresh Express, that the chopped romaine used in some of the salads was being recalled.
The products were sold by grocery stores including Trader Joe’s, Walgreens and Kroger.
They have the establishment number ‘EST. 39985 or P-39985.’ The USDA has posted a complete list online . Consumers are urged to throw them away.
Symptoms of Cyclospora infection include watery diarrhea, loss of appetite and weight, cramping, bloating or increased gas, nausea, fatigue, and low-grade fever.
People can become infected by consuming food or water contaminated with the microscopic parasite.
The parasite is usually found in developing countries but there have been several outbreaks in the US in the past few years.
