Paterson police officer charged with leaving accident that killed pedestrian

North Jersey – by Stephanie Dazio

PATERSON — A 30-year-old city police officer is charged with leaving the scene of an accident Tuesday night that killed a 23-year-old pedestrian.

Officer Jose Urena was off-duty at the time that authorities allege he struck the pedestrian. Paterson Police Director Jerry Speziale said Urena, who has been with the department for seven years, has been suspended without pay.

Jaquill Fields, 23, of Paterson, was struck by the vehicle around 8:25 p.m. at North Fourth and Temple streets, Speziale said. Fields later died at St. Joseph’s Regional Medical Center.

Urena was charged with knowingly leaving the scene of a motor vehicle accident resulting in death.

Paterson police and fire departments, as well as the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office, responded to the crash. The Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office has taken over the investigation.  Speziale referred all other questions to the prosecutor’s office.

  1. He should be drug tested and alcohol tested just like we would have been if we ran from the accident

Cop needs to be treated just like all of us, because now he’s no longer a cop
as a matter of fact I feel all cops should be tested at beginning of shift and afterwards ,, for all drugs including steroids by an independent testing facility with NO ties to any politician, Judge, Lawyer, cop, etc or tied to the cities payroll

yep I know this testing will cost , but at this point what is it costing us to put druggies , roid ragers and drunk ass cops out on the street to affect us all ?

time to hold them responsible for who they think they are
