TRENTON — President Obama is scheduled to visit New Jersey Monday with an appearance at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst to thank military service members and Department of Defense civilians for their service, the White House confirmed today.

The base is amalgam of the United States Air Force’s McGuire Air Force Base, the United States Army’s Fort Dix and the United States Navy’s Naval Air Engineering Station Lakehurst, which all merged in October 2009, and is the only base of its kind in the nation. It’s home to more than 38,000 active-duty, reserve and guard service members, civilian workers and their families.

In mid-October, Obama had been scheduled to visit New Jersey, for a Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee fundraiser in Union, but aborted that trip to convene an emergency meeting at the White House with cabinet agencies coordinating the government’s Ebola response in West Africa.

Further details about the President’s travel to New Jersey will be made available in the coming days, according to Keith Maley, regional communications director for the White House.

A spokesman for Gov. Chris Christie’s office had no immediate comment on whether Gov. Christie would attend the event.

  1. I’m sure the soldiers and their families are thrilled at the prospect of having the Commisar-in-Chief deliver one of his rousing, patriotic, and throughly forgettable speeches at their base.

  2. He will probably arrive in time to mess-up people’s Christmas leave schedules. Commanders get pressure for maximum participation. When I was on active duty I actually got a leave request back approving the week off, except the Thursday that the dignitary would be present. No offer to pay to fly me back for the day, either!

  3. I guess that means there will be a false flag attack on the base, right? That’s how it usually goes. Haven’t had a military base shooting in a week or two. It’s about time for another one, isn’t it?
