Roadblocks set around refuge, militia still inside

BURNS, Ore. (KOIN) — Federal authorities set up a perimeter around the Malheur Wildlife Refuge on Wednesday morning where militia members were still occupying in protest.

The agencies said in a statement that the containment was to ‘better ensure the safety of community members.” According to the statement, only Harney County ranchers who own property in specific areas will be required to show identification and be allowed to pass.

It was unclear how many people remained in the buildings at the refuge.Late Tuesday, Oregon Gov. Kate Brown asked for “patience as officials continue pursuit of a swift and peaceful resolution.”

Brand Thornton, one of Bundy’s supporters, said he left the refuge Monday and wasn’t sure what those remaining would do.

“The entire leadership is gone,” he told The Associated Press in a telephone interview. “I wouldn’t blame any of them for leaving.”

Thornton called the arrests “a dirty trick” by law enforcement.

Arrests made

One person died and 8 were arrested after the FBI and the Oregon State Police intercepted the group along Highway 395.

Militia leaders Ammon and Ryan Bundy along with five other members of the group were booked into Multnomah County Jail early Wednesday morning.

The militants were heading to a community meeting in John Day when they were confronted by authorities.

Shots were fired after FBI agents, Oregon State Police and other authorities made the stop. It is unclear who opened fire first. Militia spokesperson LaVoy Finicum was killed during the arrest.

The militants, calling themselves Citizens for Constitutional Freedom, came to the frozen high desert of eastern Oregon to decry what it calls onerous federal land restrictions and to object to the prison sentences of two local ranchers convicted of setting fires.

Specifically, the group wanted federal lands turned over to local authorities. The U.S. government controls about half of all land in the West. Conflicts over Western land use stretch back decades.

In the 1970s, Nevada and other states pushed for local control in what was known as the Sagebrush Rebellion. Supporters wanted more land for cattle grazing, mining and timber harvesting.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Law enforcement will hold a press conference at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday. KOIN 6 News will be live streaming the event here.

  1. “One person died and 8 were arrested after the FBI and the Oregon State Police intercepted the group along Highway 395.”

    Should have read:
“One person died and 8 were arrested after the FBI and the Oregon State Police AMBUSHED the group along Highway 395.”

They were ambushed at a predetermined point – there were snipers IN THE TREES at that specific location.

    1. yeah the guy they killed had his hands up

this was a set up..this “meeting” they were going to, was set up by the feds to get them out in the open where they could extract vengeance .. and they did just that.. shot and killed a foster parent that wasn’t any dam threat to them

  2. Please people, save all these early reports as the FBI will change the narrative, over time, to fit their agenda. If we save proof of their lies, we can expose these syphilis infected dung beetles.

  3. Here is something that needs to be asked: How many masons and good ole boys are still in the compound? The answer to this could answer many questions for the future.

  4. All Patriots, I ask that whenever you are talking, writing or posting, about the death of LeVoy Finicum, you use the term murdered, not killed. Same goes for the shooting and wounding of Ryan Bundy; use the term, attempted murder. We have the testimony of Victoria Sharp, eye witness, to the truth of this assertion. Do NOT aid the FBI in letting them set the narrative of this ambush. Correct them and their monkeys in the MSM, every time the issue comes up. I ask that you not back down one inch. No more Waco’s where scum like special agent Ricks, controlled the whole narrative. Remember: murdered!

    1. your right Swift, wish i could edit my response above to show that this man was Murdered , not killed

and now with them “surrounding” this area and not letting anyone leave , they are trapped into defending themselves if they decide to leave peacefully

that in my view is escalation

  5. Murdered, Lavoy Finicum was murdered in a state sponsored ambush. They tried and failed to murder the entire group! An attempt on Ryan Bundy’s life was thwarted by the grace of God. From this day forward all Americans are an endangered species!

    1. Grace of God, is the only explanation that there is for surviving this murderous ambush. Good on you for pointing it out. I firmly believe it was divine intervention that saved lives and to point out to the observant, the evil intent of the FBI!

  6. “Thornton called the arrests “a dirty trick” by law enforcement.”

    BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

What, you were expecting the Marquess of Queensberry Rules or something?

    “One person died…”

    Any hard evidence of that?
