Sioux Falls Man Held On $1 Million….for 114 guns and tannerite

KELOLAND TV

SIOUX FALLS, SD – Two people are behind bars after their neighbors made an alarming discovery inside their apartment.

A man found a bullet hole inside his apartment wall and later found a bullet in his mattress.  He called police and they searched the neighbor’s townhome in southeast Sioux Falls where they found over 100 guns and explosive devices.

Police arrested 29-year-old Darren Zafft and 35-year-old Jennifer Cash on multiple weapons charges.

Zafft is being held on $1 million dollars cash bond, but his mother tells KELOLAND News, all those weapons can be explained.

Darren Zafft gave the thumbs up as he walked to court Friday afternoon facing a long list of felony weapons charges.

Inside his townhome in southeast Sioux Falls, police say they found over 100 guns, some of them sawed off, and numerous explosive devices like grenades and materials to make homemade bombs.

“This could have been an extremely dangerous situation, especially if these devices had gone off,” Sioux Falls Public Information Officer Sam Clemens said.

When we stopped by Zafft’s townhome to try and talk to neighbors, we came across his mother, who told KELOLAND News there’s an explanation as to why her son had all those guns.

She says they’re a family collection.

“My father is 76 years old, we collect, we hunt, we shoot, we belonged to Gary’s Guns for 10 years for target shooting,” Lesa Zafft said.

I also asked her about what police are calling explosive devices.

“Explosive devices in their terms was tannerite, buy it over the counter and if you go to Saddleback, it’s long range, you can see it, it’s an explosive device,” Zafft said.

But she couldn’t explain the bullet hole in the townhome or the bullet the neighbor found in his mattress, but told us her son wouldn’t hurt anyone.

“No he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body, I’m sure the scare going around now is ISIS, well we’ve been doing this for 70 years, long before ISIS came up, we collected and have nothing to do with any type of terrorists, but now one million dollars cash bond for this kid,” Zafft said.

If you look at Zafft’s Facebook page, you can see he has a fascination for guns and explosive devices.

Zafft posted video clips of him blowing things up and shooting guns.  Police and the ATF continue to investigate and are trying to figure out whether or not Zafft had any intentions or plans to use any of these weapons found in his home.

“Getting into somebody’s head is always a dangerous game and trying to process what they planned on doing,” Clemens said.

Police say more charges are possible, including federal charges.

Police say in all they confiscated 114 guns – 15 of them are illegal.  Authorities also found 10,000 rounds of ammunition and several grenades.

There were also two children in the home when police arrived — ages seven and 11.

One of the suspects, Jennifer Cash, is a Sioux Falls school district employee.

Cash is an education assistant at Laura Wilder Elementary.  The Sioux Falls school district issued a statement about the arrest. It explained to parents the charges against Cash and that she was not at work today. The message said its purpose was not to alarm, but to inform.

  1. There is no need to explain why he had 114 guns. It is not illegal, it is his right to do so. Tanerite is also perfectly legal and stable. They need to arrest the arresting officers for kidnapping and conspiracy.

  2. it’s the neighbors I worry about…..”see something say something” and now it’s “see something text something” DHS propaganda ……….

  3. The neighbor’s shot the mattress and wall up, evidence to get the cops out there and go through Cash’s home.

The gun owner and his family, “mom’s” statements sound like they are sturdy American Nationals.

The neighbours have a complex called “weak, pitiful, Amerikan,” heck,” human”, so they decide to deal with their complex by having the American National busted for a non crime.

    Sounds logical to me anyway.

That must be why you lie & make sh#t up all the time, right?

“Police say in all they confiscated 114 guns – 15 of them are illegal.”

No such thing as an ‘illegal’ gun. Not according to the 2nd.

“Authorities also found 10,000 rounds of ammunition and several grenades.”

    Also not ‘ILLEGAL’.

“There were also two children in the home when police arrived — ages seven and 11.”

Kidnapped by CPS – UNLESS the grandparents were lucky enough to get them.
