McALLEN – State officials released new details about the Texas Department of Public Safety surge in the Rio Grande Valley.
The report states troopers face threats even when they are not on the clock. It also highlights the growing violence in the region. Crimes never before made public were revealed.
The report states that a Gulf cartel associate tried to block a trooper’s vehicle on June 17 in Mission. The suspect was protecting a drug load moving.
On July 4, a man on a personal watercraft rammed a DPS boat. Officials said the man was trying to stop troopers from deterring a smuggling operation.
“They just have no heart for law enforcement,” DPS Sgt. Johnny Hernandez said in an interview with CHANNEL 5 NEWS.
Smugglers have used spikes during chases and even trained their guns on Texas Parks and Wildlife Department game wardens from the Mexican side of the border.
Troopers also were involved in an hours-long standoff and shootout that left an alleged Gulf cartel member dead in La Joya.
State lawmakers say criminals increased their tactics when they increased enforcement along the border. They say criminals even spy on the troopers when they are resting after work.
The troopers will be in the Valley for at least four more months.
