Student wounded when officer’s gun discharges

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel – by Jesse Garza

A combative student at a Milwaukee elementary school was wounded Thursday when a police officer’s gun discharged during a struggle with the student, according to Milwaukee police.

The 13-year-old girl suffered a graze wound about 1 p.m. at Thoreau School, 7878 N. 60th St., according to a news release from the Milwaukee Police Department.

Officers called to the school to investigate a report that a crime might have been committed were speaking with the girl when she became “uncooperative and then combative,” according to the release.

As the officers attempted to control the girl, one officer’s firearm discharged while still in its holster, and the girl was wounded, according to the release.

The girl was taken to a hospital, where she was treated and released, and the incident remained under investigation, according to the release.

Milwaukee Police Department Smith and Wesson M&P .40 pistols are not equipped with external safeties, according to department spokesman Sgt. Timothy Gauerke.

The officer whose firearm discharged is a 40-year-old man who has been on the department for 16 years, Gauerke said.

The officer will not be placed on administrative duty because the incident is not considered an officer-involved shooting, but rather an unintentional discharge, according to Gauerke.

Thursday’s incident was the second in two days involving confrontations between police and elementary school students in which an injury occurred.

Two Milwaukee police officers were injured Wednesday during a scuffle with a student who brought a BB gun to Franklin School, 2308 W. Nash St.

According to police, officers were called to the school about 2:30 p.m. after a 13-year-old boy brought a soft shot, plastic BB gun to the school.

As the officers spoke with the boy he became combative and was taken into custody after resisting the officer’s attempts to control him, police said.

The officers, a 46-year-old man and a 46-year-old woman, were taken to a hospital with injuries that are not life-threatening and the incident will be reviewed by the Milwaukee County District Attorney’s Office, according to police, who have provided no additional details on the incident.’

  1. Most modern firearms are manufactured with the trigger acting as an internal safety mechanism, disengaging the firing pin and/or actively blocking it to prevent discharge occurring without depressing the trigger. Unless it’s in the possession of a psychopath. That automatically negates the safety of everyone near them.

  2. “….officers were called to the school about 2:30 p.m. after a 13-year-old boy brought a soft shot, plastic BB gun to the school.”

What we have here is another “highly-trained professional” who has no control over his own gun.

And how many were maimed by the BB gun?

  3. See? The police aren’t shooting kids anymore. They’re just discharging.
This is what happens when a child refuses to submit to State control.
    They get discharged.
