Texas state trooper hit by gunfire from Mexico

FRONTON, Texas (AP) — A Texas state trooper was wounded on the Texas-Mexico border when a bullet apparently strayed from a gunbattle on the Mexican side of the Rio Grande.

Lt. Johnny Hernandez of the Texas Department of Public Safety says the trooper suffered a leg wound.

The state trooper was hit about 1 p.m. Friday while on foot patrol with the Border Patrol agent in Fronton, on the border about 105 miles upstream from Brownsville. A U.S. Customs and Border Protection statement says the federal agent also was hit but was protected by body armor.

The trooper, whose identity hasn’t been released, was in stable condition at a McAllen hospital.

Hernandez says it’s unclear who was involved in the gunfight.

  1. Hmm, people are hard targets to hit even when trying. In my native Portland the police hit only one out of every ten shots fired. Trained and practiced professionals. For both men to be hit suggests they were targeted.

    1. Actually, most pigs are mediocre shots who rarely practice. Even police instructors have mentioned this “dirty little police secret”:

However, that’s not an excuse for armed, freedom-loving civilians to become complacent. Consistent 50-yard shots on a paper plate with a pistol should be our standard. It’s not as hard as many think if practice is done regularly. And there are lots of good instructional videos about proper grip, etc., on the Web.
