8:15 a.m.
Authorities say dozens of homes have been evacuated after 16 cars on a Norfolk Southern freight train carrying hazardous liquids derailed in far southwestern New York.
The fire chief in the town of Ripley says Wednesday morning that between 50 and 55 homes were evacuated after the eastbound train derailed around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday about 60 miles southwest of Buffalo.
Officials say there were no injuries and no fires, but two of the three cars containing hazardous materials leaked. Fire officials say both tankers with ethanol have been contained.
A derailed tanker containing propane is intact.
Crews are on the scene to begin removing the derailed cars.
Officials say about 30 people are at a shelter set up at a church. Other residents near the site have been urged to remain inside their homes.

Crews are working to remove some of the 16 cars on an eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train that derailed in far southwestern New York and forced the evacuation of several homes because of leaks in two ethanol tankers.
A rail company spokesman and police dispatchers say the derailment occurred around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the town of Ripley, about 60 miles southwest of Buffalo.
Officials say there were no injuries and no fires, but two of the three cars containing hazardous materials leaked. Rail officials say Wednesday morning one of leaking ethanol tankers has been contained while the leak in the other is being collected in buckets.
A derailed tanker containing propane is intact.
Officials say between 25 to 30 people have been evacuated from their homes. Other residents near the site have been urged to remain inside their homes.

Crews are working to contain a leak on an ethanol tanker that was among 16 cars on a freight train that derailed in far southwestern New York and forced the evacuation of several homes.
A spokesman for Norfolk Southern says a train derailed on the rail company’s line around 9:30 p.m. Tuesday in the town of Ripley, about 60 miles southwest of Buffalo. Gov. Andrew Cuomo had earlier said the accident occurred around 11:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Emergency services officials say Wednesday morning that no one was injured and there was no fire. But two of the derailed cars contained ethanol that leaked. Officials say one tanker has been contained and crews are working on the other. A derailed tanker containing propane is intact.
