911 call released in Coweta County Taser death

A newly-released 911 call provides more information about the final moments for a Florida man who was killed shortly after being Tased on Interstate 85 by two Coweta County Sheriff’s Deputies.

Chase Sherman’s parents said their son was hallucinating Nov. 20 after having a bad reaction to synthetic marijuana.

Chase Sherman was 32 years old and had traveled toKevin and Mary Ann Sherman, along with Chase and his fiancé, were returning home to Destin, Fla., from a trip to the Dominican Republic. They were in Atlanta and about to get on a connecting flight home when Chase Sherman started to have what they call a mental breakdown.

“My wife said that Chase didn’t really want to get on a plane again, it was too confining for him, so we decided to drive,” said Kevin Sherman.

According to Atlanta Police, the family missed their flight, but Chase Sherman refused to leave the secured area. Police were called in. The family said those officers were a great help.

APD told 11Alive that one of those officers has received mental health training. The family left the airport and no report was ever filed.

“That’s something that I think is a shining example of how officers should act and handle situations and how ones shouldn’t,” family attorney  L. Chris Stewart said.

Later that day, while driving along I-85 through Coweta County, Chase Sherman began acting erratically.

It’s a call they now regret.

According to the family, Coweta County Sheriff’s deputies arrived. The family said Sherman, who had his seat belt on, was immediately handcuffed. The deputies then repeatedly Tased Sherman.

Chase Sherman died at the scene.

“His parents did what everybody is supposed to do, you call 911. Because 911 brings help. But in the case of Chase, 911 brought death,” Stewart said.

Mary Ann Sherman told dispatch her son was threatening to hurt them. She also said she wanted to get her son mental help.

The family’s lawyer said this case highlights the need for mental health training among police officers.

“If your brother, or sister, or uncle, gets too drunk or does marijuana and is acting a little loopy or out of it, is that an excuse for an officer to come kill you? Because you’re not responding immediately? This case is dangerous for everybody,” Stewart said.

It’s not clear if the two Coweta County deputies have received any mental health training. 11Alive has requested their personnel files, but has not yet received them.

On Thursday, Chase Sherman’s parents, with their attorney, called for charges to be brought against the deputies.

The sheriff’s office has said that the deputies were acting in self-defense.

  1. Dialing 911 is almost a death sentence now a days.
Its been like this for years.

Turn off your TV and start living in the REAL WORLD.
Take responsibility for yourself and your family.
Stop counting on others to solve your problems.
If you care about your loved ones, act like it and stop counting on outsiders, who don’t give a shit, to solve your issues.

  2. “His parents did what everybody is supposed to do, you call 911. Because 911 brings help. But in the case of Chase, 911 brought death,” Stewart said.

Calling 911 brings enforcer thugs on a power trip who will attempt to generate revenue for the admiralty court system and/or beat, maim or murder the innocent for their own amusement and to satisfy their bloodlust.
    Bad idea.

  3. “According to the family, Coweta County Sheriff’s deputies arrived. The family said Sherman, who had his seat belt on, was immediately handcuffed. The deputies then repeatedly Tased Sherman.”

“The sheriff’s office has said that the deputies were acting in self-defense.”

The only thing they were acting in self-defense of was their stupidity.

Keep calling Murder Inc., er, I mean 911, people. We need more of these stories out there to show the rest of the stupid people how evil these scumbag pigs really are.

  4. How much incompetence is tolerated by these 911 operators? I just played the audio of the 911 call from Sherman’s mother, and it’s incredible. First of all, in defense of the cops, the call indicates that the deceased was a very dangerous threat to anyone coming in contact with him. But my god, how dumb and incompetent can that 911 dispatcher be? The caller said clearly, many times over, that they are located just north of Persimmon Creek Rd on I-85 southbound in Georgia. I live nowhere near Georgia, but I can picture in my mind some estimation of where she might be. Don’t these operators know a damn thing about their highways? And how come he has to ask the same question over and over and over again, when the caller already clearly gave the answer as to where she was located? Fire that damn 911 operator and get someone with intelligence there.
