(PCM) Oscar winning actor Maximilian Schell has tragically passed away at the age of 83. His agent claims his cause of death was from a long battle with an undisclosed illness.
Schell, who was born in Austria in 1930, won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1961 for his role in the film “Judgement at Nuremberg”. Schell also starred in the TV show version of “Judgement at Nuremberg” a dramatization of the Nazi war crimes tribunal, to which the film was adapted. Schell was the only cast member from the TV show to be asked to reprise his role in the film adaptation. The role was his first Oscar nomination and his only win.
Schell was nominated for an Oscar two more times for his roles in both 1975′s “The Man In The Glass Booth” and 1977′s “Julia” both of which also happen to WWII films. He also acted in the 1980 adaptation of “The Diary Of Anne Frank” and 1974′s “The Odessa File”. Schell’s last acting role was in the 2009 film “The Brothers Bloom”.
Schell career spanned into more than just acting, he also worked as a producer and director as well. His more notable works include the documentary about Marlene Dietrich and another about his sister, Maria, a famed pianist.
Schell is survived by his wife German-Croatian opera singer Iva Mihanovic. Our thoughts and prayers are with Schell’s family and friends during this difficult time.
