If we’ve told you once, we’ve told you a thousand times: it is inconsiderate to tie your used condom to a subway pole… or anywhere else in the subway system, for that matter. In fact—and this might come off as a little uptight—the only place you should be stashing your used condom is in a designated trash receptacle. (Or your freezer at home, pending approval from your roommates.)   Continue reading “Again: Please Don’t Tie Your Used Condom To The Subway Pole”

A 46-year-old Queens man died shortly after being placed in handcuffs by NYPD officers yesterday afternoon. Police say Daniel Levitt Jr. ran from officers after trying to ditch them on a scooter in Ridgewood shortly after 2 p.m. According to the NYPD, Levitt Jr. was wanted on an outstanding warrant related to a prior arrest for shoplifting an iPad Mini, and when officers in an unmarked car pulled up to him, he sped off on a scooter, heading the wrong way down Grandview Avenue.

Sources tell the Times that Levitt Jr. crashed several blocks later and then tried to flee on foot. He was apprehended and handcuffed, at which point police say he told officers he was asthmatic and having difficulty breathing. Officers say they gave him assistance with an inhaler in one of his pockets, and he said he was fine after that. The proposed euthanization of a dog belonging to a Spanish nurse infected with Ebola prompts questions about whether animals can transmit Ebola to humans.

The Ebola virus can be found across the animal kingdom, from bats and birds to pigs and porcupines. But there is a difference between having a disease and transmitting it to another animal—or another species. That’s at the heart of a controversial move by Spanish health authorities, who have obtained a court order to euthanize the dog belonging to a nurse who contracted the Ebola virus in Madrid, saying that available scientific knowledge suggests dogs can transmit the virus to humans. But how much do we know about which animals can catch and transmit the deadly virus?   Continue reading “Can Dogs (And Other Animals) Get Ebola?”
