At first glance, the one-room log cabin in the Blue Mountains of Oregon looks like any other deer camp: a wood stove for heat, soft drinks piled outside on the porch to keep them cold, and camouflage clothing hanging from the stairs leading to a loft.

Closer examination begins to tell a tragic story. A piece of clothing soaked in dark red blood lies crumpled on the floor near a bolt-action rifle with a telescopic sight, the bolt open.   Continue reading “Deer-hunting cabin photos show scene of double-murder in eastern Oregon”

The arrests of several students who unwittingly and accidentally violated school weapon policies has some Georgian lawmakers saying “zero tolerance” makes zero sense.

A Cobb County high school senior was charged with the felony of bringing weapons into a school zone after police found fishing knives in a tackle box in his car. Cody Chitwood, a 17-year-old student at Lassiter High School and avid fisherman, turned himself in and was released on $1,000 bond.   Continue reading “Felony weapons charge for student who brought fishing supplies to school”

DETROIT — DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit-area cancer doctor accused of intentionally misdiagnosing patients and ordering unnecessary treatments will remain in jail until trial, a judge said Wednesday after prosecutors insisted he might flee to the Middle East.

Dr. Farid Fata, in custody since Aug. 6, wanted the judge to lower his $9 million bond to $500,000 and give him a chance to win release. But the decision was worse for the Oakland County man: No bond.   Continue reading “Dr. Farid Fata, Cancer Doctor, Accused Of Intentionally Misdiagnosing Patients”

Donald Trump has expressed an interest in possibly purchasing Plum Island, the 843-acre island off the coast of New York. The government-owned island has been the site of a laboratory that conducted controversial animal infectious disease experiments, but it stopped operating in 2009. The U.S. government is considering selling it to finance a new facility in Manhattan, Kansas. According to an Oct. 1 report on ABC News, Trump is not sure what he would do with the possibly hazardous site, but says it would not be on a big scale. The real estate giant is interested in looking at it, though.   Continue reading “Plum Island: Is Trump interested in Montauk real estate or Montauk Monster?”

California NDAA banHuffington Post

Gov. Jerry Brown (D) signed a statewide ban on indefinite detentions into law Tuesday, prohibiting compliance with provisions of federal law.

After receiving overwhelming bipartisan support in the California State Assembly, Brown approved AB 351, in effect banning any state assistance with federal enforcement of “indefinite detention” of vaguely defined “enemy combatants,” including American citizens, without due process, as outlined in the the 2012 National Defense Authorization Act.   Continue reading “Jerry Brown Signs California Ban On Indefinite Detentions”

It’s official. Texas is leaving behind George W. Bush’s baby — the No Child Left Behind education law.

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced Monday that he approved the application of Texas, Bush’s home state, for a waiver from the No Child Left Behind Act. This makes Texas the 42nd state to receive permission to ditch the notorious education law’s most onerous strictures.   Continue reading “George W. About 16,000 law enforcement agencies internationally use Tasers, but this weekend, five police departments in North Texas — Mansfield, Richland Hills, Crowley, Murphy and Burleson — announced they had removed Taser guns from the list of equipment used by officers.

While none of the Texas-based police department have explicitly explained why they decided to remove the Tasers, Pete Shulte, a private attorney, told a Texas blogger he thought the departments enacted the ban to protect themselves from lawsuits.   Continue reading “Five Texas Police Departments Ban Tasers”

fracking chemicalsHuffington Post – by Kate Sheppard

Critics of hydraulic fracturing, known widely as “fracking,” have been pushing hard for natural gas companies to disclose all of the chemicals in the fluids that are used in the process. But what if the companies themselves don’t even know what those chemicals are?

Documents from a lawsuit against Texas-based Range Resources suggest that they may not. The documents are part of an appeal that a resident of Washington County, Pa., has made to the state’s Environmental Hearing Board. The plaintiff in the case alleges that a Range wastewater impoundment, which holds water left over from hydraulic fracturing operations, contaminated well water. Washington County has been a focal point in the debate over fracking, which uses a high-pressure stream of water, sand and chemicals to tap into shale reserves below the earth’s surface. (See the full filing here.)   Continue reading “Fracking Chemicals May Be Unknown, Even To Gas Drillers, Lawsuit Documents Suggest”

New Details in Case of Officer Taking NY Man Jon Gibsons Pro Gun SignTheBlaze – by Jason Howerton

A police officer was justified in taking a New York man’s pro-Second Amendment sign as the city of Somers, N.Y., has determined it was located on “public property,” Town Supervisor Mary Beth Murphy told TheBlaze.

However, the man’s attorney, Richard Bombardo, of Syracuse, strongly refuted the claim, telling TheBlaze “that’s not what the law says.” To that effect, the attorney said he and his client, Jon Gibson, will “probably” file federal civil rights lawsuit.   Continue reading “Lawyer vs. Town Supervisor: New Details in Case of Officer Taking Man’s Pro-Gun Sign”
