Roadkill For Dinner? Montana Wants To Make It LegalCare 2 – by Beth Buczynski

We’ll all see them. The forsaken carcasses of animals who wanted to cross the road but ended up getting steamrolled by passing traffic. Roadkill is yet another consequence of humanity’s encroachment on the natural world, and it’s even more common in areas where there’s more wildlife than people.

We may shudder or feel sympathy for the poor animal while passing by, but once it’s in our rear-view mirror, few give roadkill a second thought. Some in Montana feel that’s a wasted opportunity.   Continue reading “Roadkill For Dinner? Montana Wants To Make It Legal”

Body modification has taken on vastly different meanings over the years, from wearing makeup and piercing our ears to getting tattoos and going to tanning salons. As the Verge and futurist blog i09 have reported, body modification now even covers “biohackers” who seek to make changes to their bodies so they can gain additional senses.

This new form of body modification may be heading mainstream — and fast. Implants are becoming less taboo, and many have talked to Gizmodo and NPR about the advantages of magnet-studded fingers so they can sense electricity. Medical researchers recently made a prototype of a device that’s implanted under your skin, analyzes your blood concentration, and sends that information to your mobile device. There’s even a Barcelona-based Cyborg Foundation dedicated entirely to the production of new senses.   Continue reading “5 Body Modifications That Can Give You A Sixth Sense”

According to a new Harris Poll survey, conducted on behalf of the management consulting firm Accenture, less than one-third of U.S. doctors think patients should have full access to their own electronic health records.

As a patient, you may literally trust your doctor with your life, and the doctor-patient relationship relies on this level of trust. The  relationship should be one of give and take, even if the exchange is sometimes dominated by the professional.   Continue reading “Electronic Health Records: Doctors Want to Keep Patients Out”

On the 10th anniversary of New York City banning smoking in bars and restaurants, Mayor Michael Bloomberg rebuffed any claims that his controversial public health policies violate the underpinnings of American capitalism.

“We interfere with free enterprise all the time,” Mr. Bloomberg said this morning at a press conference commemorating the Smoke-Free Air Act. “We set minimum prices and sizes on lots of things. … Most of the cost of cigarettes is in taxes and they’re taxes that are enacted by Albany. So if you don’t like that, my suggestion is you go up to Albany and ask them why they’re taxing cigarettes. I happen to think it’s a great idea because it saves kids’s lives, so maybe you want to also talk to the parents of the kids and say, ‘We’re gonna try to stop this and have them smoke and they’ll die.’”   Continue reading “Mayor Bloomberg: ‘We Interfere With Free Enterprise All the Time’”
