Groups protesting police brutality staged a rally at the vigil site for Kimani Gray on Sunday afternoon, followed by a march that wound through East Flatbush and eventually to the 67th Precinct. Throughout the march, the 200 or so demonstrators were accompanied by an astounding number of police, one of whom brandished a megaphone designed as a non-lethal deterrent. At times police appeared to outnumber protesters by three or four to one. One protester was detained after stepping off of the sidewalk, but an NYPD spokesman could not confirm that any arrests were made. Two train enthusiasts who were arrested for photographing in the subway have won a big victory for all New Yorkers who don’t want to show their papers while commuting. Steve Barry and Michael Burkhart were arrested in August 2010 at Broad Channel while waiting for one of the MTA’s beloved nostalgia trains to roll in. Barry, the editor of Railfan & Railroad Magazine, and Burkhart were taking photos on the platform when a cop approached them and told them that photography was prohibited in the subway system. This, as most of us know, is not true, and when Barry questioned the legality of the officer’s order, they were told to produce identification. This morning, during his weekly interview with John Gambling, Mayor Michael Bloomberg was asked about the NYPD using domestic drones in the city. Bloomberg’s answer is…disturbing.
Bloomberg claimed that he wasn’t taking sides on the issue. “It’s not a question of whether I think it’s good or bad, I just don’t see how you can stop that because we’re going to have them.”“We’re just going into a different world. Uncharted,” he said. “Like it or not, what people can do, or governments can do, is different and you can to some extent control [it], but you can’t keep the tides from coming in. We’re going to have more visibility and less privacy. I don’t see how you stop that.” Continue reading “Bloomberg: Drones are here to stay and you’ll have less privacy. Deal with it”

As the U.S. Congress debates gun control legislation, two of the countries’ leading advocates on the issue–Vice President Joe Biden and Mayor Michael Bloomberg–held a City Hall press conference today to pressure federal lawmakers to have enough “courage” to vote in favor of the bill when it hits the floor. Standing behind victims’ family members from last year’s massacre at a Newtown, Connecticut elementary school, Mr. Biden and Mr. Bloomberg argued the measures being proposed are neither controversial or unconstitutional. NEW YORK (AP) — Mayor Michael Bloomberg on Wednesday blasted a plan to create an inspector general for the New York Police Department, vowing if needed to veto a proposal that he said would undermine the city’s crime-fighting success.
A day after City Council Speaker Christine Quinn signaled that the measure would likely pass the council, Bloomberg urged lawmakers to oppose it, saying it would usher in an era of second-guessing for a police force that has worked to drive crime to record lows.
