Water is second only to oxygen in the hierarchy of survival. Without it, in 3 days, you’ll die. But it goes much further than that. Water is vital for basic sanitation, for growing more food, for raising livestock, for cooking, and for treating injuries. So even if you have enough to drink, without enough for those other needs, your chances aren’t good.
The solutions you choose for water should be based on whether your plans for long term survival are bugging out to a secondary or unknown location, or sheltering in place. This week we’ll talk about solutions for bugging in. Continue reading “Long Term Water Solutions: Bugging In”

I don’t watch much TV, but my guilty pleasure is AMC’s The Walking Dead. Lots of the preppers I know love watching this show and shouting out advice and criticism – it’s like our version of watching “the big game”.
I have to tell you, watching from a prepper/survival point of view, it seems like this season that the main characters are just muddling along, tempting the writers to kill them off. They definitely aren’t surviving based on any real skills or planning. Continue reading “The Walking Dead: 7 Mistakes That Would Get Somebody Killed in a Real Zombie Apocalypse”
Are you frazzled and confused every time you go to the grocery store and attempt to strain your little brain to read those labels with all of the big, scary words? Do you stand in line, wringing your hands over the terrifying experience of trying to shop for your family? Is it a horribly trying experience, culminating in a paroxysm of anxiety at the checkout stand?
Well, thank goodness for us moms, the First Lady of the United States understands. Continue reading “Before Michelle Obama’s New Labels, “all you could do was scratch your head, confused and bewildered” at the Grocery Store”
Well, thank goodness we have First Lady Michelle Obama looking after our school-age children. Even though her last round of rules for school lunches collapsed (thankfully before the hungry kids did), the FLOTUS isn’t done yet with her meddling.
In a world where a place that sells sandwiches topped with crumbled up GMO Fritos is touted as healthy, it only makes sense that the woman promoting this restaurant to help fight childhood obesity is in charge of making up rules that are geared to keep kids in line. According to some experts, wheat is more like the staff of death than the staff of life these days. Due to genetic modifications of wheat over the past century (go HERE to learn how scientists “fixed” wheat during the 60s), the grain that appears in nearly every meal in America seems to be causing serious health concerns, particularly inflammation and autoimmune issues.
The problem is, gluten-free food is a billion dollar industry, and at the prices Big Food is charging for these specialty items, it’s easy to see how fast the bills can rack up. Continue reading “How to Go Gluten-Free Without Contributing to the Billion Dollar Big Food Rip-Off”
The Organic Prepper – by John Q. Public
Why communicate at all?
And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32
For our safety, edification, and survival we need to know what is happening and what to do about it. As the plethora of prepper blogs and forums reveal, preppers have a lot to say—much of it informative, enlightening, and insightful and some of it disinformation, illogical, unmitigated drivel, and even evil. We need to screen the nuggets from the waste. Logic, critical analysis, and a well-formed conscience help us do that. Continue reading “Resistance 101: Why You Should Consider Ham Radio for Communications”
If you shop in the health food section of the grocery store or read the foodie blogs, you may have noticed a trend over the past couple of years: gluten intolerance seems to be on the rise.
Kristen Michaelis explains this intolerance very clearly on the website Food Renegade: Continue reading “Gluten Intolerance: Is It Just a Fad or Is Today’s Wheat Really Toxic?”
The Organic Prepper – by Daisy Luther
When I moved from Ontario, Canada to the Pacific Northwestern United States, I was unable to bring my stockpile with me. It was a situation I wanted to rectify as quickly as possible when I arrived at my new destination.
I began rebuilding my pantry and documenting it in a series that I posted my website. The series, called The Pantry Primer, was very well-received because many of us are in the same situation. We have less food than we wish to have stockpiled, and we’re on a budget, which can make building our stores challenging. Continue reading “Announcement: The Pantry Primer is Now Available on Amazon”
Let’s talk about the meaning of a “god-complex”. Wikipedia defines a “god complex” as
“an unshakable belief characterized by consistently inflated feelings of personal ability, privilege, or infallibility. A person with a god complex may refuse to admit the possibility of their error or failure, even in the face of complex or intractable problems or difficult or impossible tasks, or may regard their personal opinions as unquestionably correct.” Continue reading “Pediatrician with a God Complex Refuses to Treat Unvaccinated Children”
Let the wind blow, let the snow fall, let the power go out. You’ve got it under control. You have your water, your off-grid heating method and enough fuel to see you through until spring, your food that can easily be prepared without electricity, your candles and fully charged solar lanterns. You are set to weather this storm for however long it wants to assault your area. Continue reading ““I’m bored”: 30 Ways to Keep Kids Entertained When the Power Goes Out”
When the power goes out, my kids tend to think it’s party time. They like it because it means that we are definitely going to play some games, do some arts and crafts, and eat some food we don’t normally indulge in.
Of course we have back-up cooking methods for heating food when the electricity goes out, We became accustomed to it, since it happens with relative frequency, but in our old house in the city it wasn’t so easy. Still, in the summer, we don’t want to fire up the woodstove and during a storm, we don’t want to stand outside in the rain cooking on the barbecue. So, during a short term power outage, it makes life easier in many cases to eat things that don’t require much in the way of preparation. We have specific preps for this situation that require no cooking. It’s probably the only time we regularly consume food that hasn’t been made from scratch, so for the girls, it’s a bit of a treat. What’s the difference between an arm-chair survivalist and the real deal? The difference between someone who could get by for a few weeks and someone who could thrive indefinitely?
One word – action.
I was lucky enough to meet someone who is the real deal recently. Mark is a long-term survivalist, and he graciously answered about a million questions about his lifestyle. The end result was, I learned a lot, including how little I actually know in comparison to someone who lives an off-grid, non-consumer life every single day. Even better, I have permission to share this information with the rest of you in the form of a new series: Long-Term Survival. It’s beyond dispute that the United States is facing a water crisis. On the West Coast, where much of our produce is raised, an on-going drought has California governor Jerry Brown hinting that water conservation efforts might soon become mandatory. On the East Coast, the water is plentiful but is polluted by chemical spills, as seen in West Virginia and radioactive leaks, as seen in South Carolina.
Two years ago, Michael Snyder wrote about the endless drought of 2012, calling it the largest natural disaster in American history. He predicted a water shortage that will change the lives of every person on the planet, and he was right – we are living his prediction right now. The game is called “Cross the Line” and many outraged parents believe that it does just that.
A middle school in Marinette, Wisconsin got a group of 5th-8th graders together and organized a really fun game that asked students to step forward to answer “yes” to a series of highly personal questions. Questions like… Continue reading “It’s All Fun and Games as a Wisconsin School Gets Kids to Snitch on Parents”
Want to avoid becoming part of the cancer epidemic? Here’s a good rule of thumb: If you wouldn’t eat it, perhaps you shouldn’t rub it on your skin.
Of course, this is oversimplified – there are many natural cosmetics that are not really items you’d want to ingest, but the principal is sound. Why? First of all, because your skin is permeable, and it’s only 1/10th of an inch thick! So anything that you put on your skin has easy access to your bloodstream. Secondly, many of these chemicals cause toxic vapors that pose serious risk when inhaled. Add this to the steam of the shower, and those vapors have even easier access to your lungs.
The Environmental Working Group, and EcoWatch have assembled a list of the 7 most dangerous chemical additives in cosmetics. Continue reading “If Looks Could Kill: Is Your Beauty Regimen Putting You at Risk for Cancer?”
An unusual snowstorm in the Southeastern US left hundreds of motorists stranded overnight in their vehicles. Like a scene out of “The Walking Dead” (but with snow), freeways in Georgia and Alabama came to a complete halt in an epic gridlock.
Residents of the area were warned that a winter storm, quite severe for that part of the country, was headed their way. But when the morning dawned without a cloud in the sky, people went blithely about their business. Kids went to school, adults went to work, and it all went downhill in the early afternoon in a big way. Continue reading “Stranded: Freak Snowstorm in the South Results in Epic Overnight Gridlock”
Amy Glass is clueless and apparently rather bitter.
Amy Glass is a feminist blogger that I’d never heard of before someone sent me a link to this post. Her bio includes links to such gems as I Use My Sexuality To Get Ahead At Work and Hillary Clinton Has Given Just As Much To This World As The Stay At Home Wife In My 11am Yogalates Class. She also can’t spell very well, but it would be catty to say that. (oops)
I read her arrogant post called ”I Look Down On Young Women With Husbands And Kids And I’m Not Sorry” thinking that there had to be a punchline, some merit, some deep social concept that I had heretofore been missing. Continue reading “I Look Down on Clueless Bitter Feminists and I’m Not Sorry”
Do you ever have one of those days when you’re reading the news, and you have an epiphany?
This morning I realized, looking over the day’s information, we don’t need to be depopulated. No dramatic measures need to be taken. People are dumb enough to do it all on their own. Darwin was right – they’ll just weed themselves out. Continue reading “The Morning News: Proving Darwin Right, One Story at a Time”
