In the line at the store, the cashier told the older woman that she should bring her own grocery bag because plastic bags weren’t good for the environment. The woman apologized to him and explained,
“We didn’t have the green thing back in my day!
The clerk responded, “That’s our problem today. The former generation did not care enough to save our environment.” Continue reading “Just how Green was that Older Generation?”
The Supreme Court has ruled that police must usually try to obtain a search warrant from a judge before ordering blood tests for drunken-driving suspects.
The justices on Wednesday sided with a Missouri man who was subjected to a blood test without a warrant and found to have nearly twice the legal limit of alcohol in his blood. Continue reading “Court rejects routine no-warrant DUI blood tests”

PHOENIX — Saying that guns are public assets worth money, state senators voted Tuesday to close what they say are the last loopholes in the law allowing cities to destroy weapons that come into their possession.
The measure which now goes to Gov. Jan Brewer would most immediately slam the door on gun “buyback” programs where cities like Tucson, using donated funds or gift cards, ask residents to surrender weapons that they would like destroyed. As I write this, we still don’t know who was responsible for the horrific bombing attack in Boston. Perhaps it will turn out to be the work of home grown rightwing nuts; perhaps it’s the act of foreign terrorists. But, whatever the source, what strikes me is the number of times the barbaric assault is being denounced as “cowardly”
As in Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis’s warning that “This cowardly act will not be taken in stride.” Continue reading “Boston, Cowardice & America the Blind”

In late September 2011, AFP reported that a man was charged with “planning to fly explosive-packed, remote controlled airplanes into the Pentagon and the Capitol in Washington.” In its report, “US man charged with Pentagon bomb plot,” AFP stated (emphasis added):
During the alleged plot, undercover FBI agents posed as accomplices who supplied Ferdaus with one remote-controlled plane, C4 explosives, and small arms that he allegedly envisioned using in a simultaneous ground assault in Washington. Walking up to a department store’s fabric counter, the pretty girl said, “I would like to buy this material for a new dress. How much does it cost?” “Only one kiss per yard,” replied the male clerk with a smirk. “That’s fine,” said the girl. “I’ll take ten yards.” With expectation and anticipation written all over his face, the clerk quickly measured out the cloth, wrapped it up, then teasingly held it out. President Obama has riled loyal Democrats by tossing Social Security onto the table in his poker game with Republicans. Not to worry. I think I know how this story ends. A year from now, when the 2014 congressional campaigns are hot underway, Republicans will be running against Obama-the-slasher and promising to protect Social Security from the bloodthirsty Democrats.
By then, having lost on his too-cute strategy, the president will be reduced to lamely reassuring old folks. Really, he didn’t actually intend to cut their benefits, really he didn’t. It was just a ploy to get tightwad conservatives to give in a little on tax increases. Republicans can pull out the videotapes in which Obama and team explain their high-minded purpose—sacrificing the Democratic party’s sacred honor in order to get Republicans to play nice. Continue reading “Will Voters Forgive Obama for Cutting Social Security?”

The person who has nothing for which he is willing to Fight, nothing which is more important than his own Personal Safety, is a Miserable Creature and has No Chance of being Free unless made and kept so by the Exertions of Better Men than Himself.” Continue reading “When it comes to my Second Amendment Rights….. PARIS (AP) — A contested auction of dozens of Native American tribal masks went ahead Friday afternoon following a Paris court ruling, in spite of appeals for a delay by the Hopi tribe, its supporters, including actor Robert Redford, and the U.S. government.
About 2-1/2 hours after the court announced its decision, auctioneers began selling dozens of brilliantly colored masks made of wood, leather, horse hair and feathers across town at Drouot auction house. Continue reading “Paris Court Allows Sale of Native American Artifacts”
