Did you know that residents of Montgomery County, Maryland, are legally required to register their bicycles? Neither did Steve Silverman, who last June received a criminal citation for violating that requirement. In a video about that experience, Silverman, founder of Flex Your Rights, presents it as an example of how “police use ill-conceived laws to punish people who assert their rights.” While Silverman’s brush with the law was relatively mild as these things go, it does illustrate the problems posed by the myriad excuses that legislators give police for hassling people they deem insufficiently respectful. If you filed for a cash payout from Equifax as part of the credit bureau’s settlement for its massive 2017 data breach, you’re probably not getting anywhere close to $125.

On Thursday, Dec. 19, a Georgia federal judge awarded $77.5 million to the attorneys representing the class of consumers against Equifax. That’s over 20% of the roughly $380 million settlement fund Equifax agreed to set up to directly help consumers affected by the breach, according to the Hamilton Lincoln Law Institute, which house the Center for Class Action Fairness and opposed the high fee awardContinue reading “If you made a claim for $125 from Equifax, you’re not getting it after court awards nearly $80 million to attorneys”

New York took a dramatic step on Monday toward providing illegal immigrants more privacy rights than law-abiding citizens. On December 16, the state’s “Green Light” law took effect, having been signed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D-NY) in June.

The law allows illegal immigrants to apply for a driver’s license, since a Social Security number is no longer needed. In addition, the law allows unverified foreign documentation to be used as proof of identity. Further, the law prevents Department of Homeland Security (DHS) law enforcement officers from obtaining public records when they run license plates on vehicles registered to illegal immigrants.  Continue reading “New York’s New Green Light Law Allows Illegal Immigrants To Obtain Driver’s Licenses And Prevents DHS From Investigating Crimes”
