Terry L. Sharkey is a man who can be described as a modern-day homesteader. He set up camp in the Cherokee National Forest in the Southern Appalachian Mountains of east Tennessee. Sharkey had planted a garden, pitched a tent, formed a bathtub made of rock, and flew a rebel flag. Unfortunately for him, the land he chose purportedly belongs to the federal government, and they won’t stand for the likes of Sharkey.

The Ebola patient in an isolation unit in a Texas hospital, Thomas Eric Duncan, has died, officials said today.

“It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7:51 a.m.,” the hospital said in a statement.

“Mr. Duncan succumbed to an insidious disease, Ebola. He fought courageously in this battle. Tuesday this week commemorates 13 years since the start of the Afghan War — America’s longest running campaign of its kind — yet an end to the operation is hardly on the horizon.

Under the terms of the Bilateral Security Agreement, the pact signed last week by representatives for both the United States and Afghanistan, the US will significantly reduce the number of soldiers involved in its post-9/11 Operation Enduring Freedom at the end of this year. Troop numbers will shrink to 10,000, signaling indeed a major step towards ending the war in Afghanistan — a campaign promise made by US President Barack Obama during the lead-up to his re-election in 2012. Connecticut’s governor declared a public health emergency in the Nutmeg State. The precautionary order, signed by Gov. Dannel Malloy, allows public health officials to coordinate a targeted quarantine in case Ebola arrives in the state.

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) — An air tanker fighting a wildfire on the edge of Yosemite National Park in Northern California smashed into a steep canyon wall Tuesday, killing the pilot who was believed to be the only person aboard, officials said.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Timothy Geithner, a key player in the U.S. government’s 2008 bailout of American International Group Inc., is due back in court Wednesday in a trial of a lawsuit filed by the insurance giant’s former CEO over the handling of the rescue.

MURSITPINAR, Turkey (AP) — Several Syrian human rights groups called on the world to save the embattled Syrian Kurdish town of Kobani from falling into the hands of the Islamic State group as new U.S.-led airstrikes targeted the extremists near the town Wednesday.

The strikes are part of a wave of U.S.-led coalition bombing this week that aims to prevent Islamic State fighters from capturing the town.
