Once the fourth-biggest lake in the world, the eastern basin of the Aral Sea in central Asia is now completely dry. It is the result of a Soviet-era project to divert rivers for agriculture and a lack of rainfall at its source.

“This is the first time the eastern basin has completely dried in modern times,” Philip Micklin, an Aral Sea expert from Western Michigan University told NASA’s Earth Observatory, which captured fresh satellite images of the lake. “And it is likely the first time it has completely dried in 600 years, since Medieval desiccation [drying out] associated with diversion of Amu Darya to the Caspian Sea.”   Continue reading “NASA pics show Aral Sea basin now completely dry”

BOSTON — National Grid is warning customers that they will see a significant increase in their electricity bills beginning in November.

Thus far this election cycle has been a dud. Hardly a sweat is broken in the rarified air of partisan politics punditry. The only consistent factor that can always be counted upon to amuse is the reams of paper wasted on the false promises and prevarication made by the esteemed party regulars. It is easy to simply blame the entrenched incumbents or the current crop of insurgents, but it goes much deeper when an entire nation remains mute in the face of the worse run and most condemnable conduct, coming out of the District of Criminals in decades. Here’s a restaurant all gun enthusiasts need to check out: Grits-N-Gravy located in Elberta, Alabama.  They’re known for their coffee, grits, omelets and his cook’s specialty — pecan french toast. But what’s so special about it? The owner keeps a 9mm handgun is in a holster at his waist while he is working.

The small breakfast bar style restaurant is owned by Doug Stewart, a former Army sergeant. He says that he openly carries the gun to protect himself, his employees, and his customers.  He started carrying after a man pointed a gun at his cook on Dec. 31, 2012, and robbed the place. Thanks to satellite weather photos, we’ve been able to observe a persistent, virtually permanent, huge, blocking High Pressure system off the West Coast for the last two months…most of November, December and into January.

We have watched the satellite photos reveal how storm after storm formed up, as usual, in the Kamchatka, Korea and Northern Japan (Fukushima) areas of the North West Pacific.

British Tornado jets have returned to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus after carrying out a fifth combat sortie over Iraq.

The pair returned to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus, and BBC defence correspondent Jonathan Beale said there were “no reports of any weapons dropped”.

American schools are scrambling to provide services to the large number of children and teenagers who crossed the border alone in recent months.

Unaccompanied minors who made up the summer spike at the border have moved to communities of all sizes, in nearly every state, Federal data indicates, to live with a relative and await immigration decisions. Earlier this summer when the unaccompanied minor crisis was at its peak (after really starting in October 2013) in Texas and Arizona, Border Patrol agents working inside processing facilities reported cases of Tuberculosis, scabies and other diseases being brought into the United States by unvaccinated illegal aliens. Warnings were issued by local communities about the impact these diseases could potentially have in the public school system where their children are educated. For example, protesters in Murrieta, California turned bus loads of illegal immigrants away, citing concerns about public health. Officer Eugene Donnelly’s hangover continued Monday at his arraignment in Bronx Supreme Court.

The man who jumped the White House fence this month and sprinted through the front door made it much farther into the building than previously known, overpowering one Secret Service officer and running through much of the main floor, according to three people familiar with the incident.
