MONROVIA, Liberia (AP) — Liberian officials fear Ebola could soon spread through the capital’s largest slum after residents raided a quarantine center for suspected patients and took items including bloody sheets and mattresses.

The violence in the West Point slum occurred late Saturday and was led by residents angry that patients were brought to the holding center from other parts of Monrovia, Tolbert Nyenswah, assistant health minister, said Sunday.   Continue reading “Liberia: Ebola spread fears rise as clinic looted”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A stowaway who was recently ordered to spend 117 days in jail for violating probation by returning to Los Angeles International Airport served a fraction of her sentence when she was released Saturday because of overcrowding.

Marilyn Jean Hartman, 62, was released from the Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood, California, shortly after 6 p.m., according to jail records. She was released because of jail overcrowding and a state program that credits nonviolent misdemeanor offenders such as Hartman for good behavior, time served and other circumstances, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Crystal Hernandez said.   Continue reading “Woman who sneaked on plane gets early jail release”

CAIRO (AP) — The Palestinians appeared divided Sunday as the clock was winding down on the latest Gaza cease-fire, with officials saying Hamas was still opposed to a compromise Egyptian proposal that would ease the closure of the territory, while other factions, including delegates representing President Mahmoud Abbas, were inclined to accept.

Hamas officials said they were holding out in hopes of getting more concessions in the Egyptian-mediated talks. With a temporary truce set to expire late Monday, a range of outcomes remained possible, including a return to fighting that has brought great devastation to Gaza, an unofficial understanding that falls short of a formal negotiated deal or yet another extension in negotiations.   Continue reading “Palestinian divisions emerge in Gaza peace talks”

Many things effect our ability to do certain things. However nothing stops us from doing what is right. When we see our nation making wrong turns we feel that sense of dread creep up in our hearts. Well today is one of those days.

This nation is rocking along on a flat tire on it’s way to another unwanted war. No! I am not talking about the insane movements our Commander in Thief is making in Europe, Middle East, and Asia. I am talking about the rise of anger among our people over the insidious taking of our liberties. Those who have had the duty to serve in other places in combat know we don’t want to see that here in our backyard, but the alternatives are not any better.   Continue reading “Come on Down! Chaos broke out in the streets of Ferguson on Friday night, the same day that police announced the name of the officer who killed unarmed teenager Michael Brown andreleased footage appearing to show Brown stealing cigarettes from a convenience store. Ferguson Police Chief Tom Jackson later said Friday the initial contact between Brown and officer Darren Wilson was not related to a convenience store robbery.

A peaceful protest on Friday night turned into another confrontation with police after some in the crowd reportedly threw rocks and people began looting stores, including the convenience store that Brown was accused of robbing. Police formed lines and fired tear gas to disperse the crowd.   Continue reading “Ferguson Protesters Guard Stores From Looters”

The Economic Collapse – by Michael Snyder

Back in the early 1990s, the North American Free Trade Agreement was one of the hottest political issues in the country.  When he was running for president in 1992, Bill Clinton promised that NAFTA would result in an increase in the number of high quality jobs for Americans that it would reduce illegal immigration.  Ross Perot warned that just the opposite would happen.  He warned that if NAFTA was implemented there would be a “giant sucking sound” as thousands of businesses and millions of jobs left this country.  Most Americans chose to believe Bill Clinton.  Well, it is 20 years later and it turns out that Perot was right and Clinton was dead wrong.  But now history is repeating itself, and most Americans don’t even realize that it is happening.  As you will read about at the end of this article, Barack Obama has been negotiating a secret trade treaty that is being called “NAFTA on steroids”, and if Congress adopts it we could lose millions more good paying jobs.   Continue reading “NAFTA Is 20 Years Old – Here Are 20 Facts That Show How It Is Destroying The Economy”

“The role of the President of the United States is to support the decisions that are made by the people of Israel.”          Ann Lewis, sister of former Congressman Barney Frank

The idea that the best America could achieve in Iraq would be to divide the country into Kurdish, Sunni and Shi’ite sectors is not really new. It was an old idea in 1982 when Ze’ev Schiff, the military correspondent of Ha’aretz, first suggested it. (Ha’aretz 6/2/1982). It was also mentioned by Oded Yinon in that same year in A Strategy For Israel in the Nineteen Eighties.  Continue reading “Israel’s Gift: The American Quagmires in Iraq And Afghanistan”

Hours prior to taking off for his Martha’s Vineyard millionaires’ paradise vacation, White House staff in conjunction with someone from the Pentagon, attempted to update the president on international security concerns, namely those focused on both Syria and Iraq, as well as the ongoing Gaza conflict, an attempt that was brushed off by a clearly annoyed Barack Obama who wanted nothing more than to turn his back on the demands of a job he long ago grew tired of.   Continue reading “D.C. Waging NonViolence – by Anna Lekas Miller

On Tuesday, a group of activists from the London Palestine Action group chained the doors shut at the UAV Engines factory in Staffordshire, England, then scaled and occupied the roof. Their demands? That the U.K. government end the factory’s manufacture and export of parts used on Israeli drones in light of the recent events in Gaza.

The UAV Engines factory is one of two U.K.-based subsidiaries of Elbit Systems, a company producing electronic military communication systems and unmanned aircraft systems, including the Hermes drone, which is used by the Israeli Air Forces. As such, Elbit Systems is a frequent target of the Boycott, Divestments and Sanctions movement, which targets companies that supply infrastructure to and profit off of the Israeli occupation of Palestine.   Continue reading “UK activists shut down weapons factory in protest of Israel’s assault on Gaza”
