Well, the Fort Lauderdale Police Department isn’t using an oracle yet, but it is getting one step closer to Minority Report-style crime predicting. The department has become the latest agency to use big data analytics and data mining to prevent crime by staying one step ahead of criminals. According to IBM, the company has entered into a partnership with the Fort Lauderdale PD to integrate new data and analytics tools into everyday crime fighting. SAN JOSE, Calif., Oct. 26 (UPI) — Students in San Jose, Calif., can no longer hold car washes to raise for money for school events because city officials say they endanger the environment.

My wife, the syndicated San Francisco Chronicle columnist Debra J. Saunders, has learned that at least 500,000 Californians may lose their health insurance next year — and that’s a conservative estimate. From her Token Conservative blog:

According to this link as of December 2012, there were 491,977 covered lives in individual health care plans regulated by the state Department Insurance that are not grandfathered under the Affordable Care Act. (If they bought a plan after March 2010, their coverage is not grandfathered.) Sarah Palin found a novel way to turn down an interview request from Piers Morgan on Friday, posting a picture on Facebook of a bear she had shot dead and a note saying she was busy.

The former Alaska governor thanked chat show host Morgan for inviting her on his ‘shambolic show’ but added she was ‘kind of busy right now’.

NEW YORK –  Police say a Tennessee man has checked luggage containing a loaded, defaced rifle at New York’s Kennedy International Airport.

Keenan Draughon (DRAW’-guhn) was arrested Saturday morning trying to board a flight to Charlotte, N.C., after Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police found the weapons. A moose hunter in Norway found himself inadvertently pursuing a different type of game this week when an errant bullet missed its mark and broke through the wall of a nearby cabin.
