A grand jury indicted an illegal immigrant from El Salvador in connection to the death of Samantha Dailey, 32, of Charles Town, West Virginia. David Antonio Calderon, 46, has been accused of killing Dailey in Jefferson County and then setting her body on fire in a field in neighboring Berkeley County. American students are performing poorly in reading and math skills, failing to regain lost ground during the COVID-19 pandemic, according to 2024 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) tests administered to fourth graders and eighth graders.
“The most notable challenges evident in the 2024 data are in reading comprehension. Reading scores dropped in both fourth and eighth grades since 2022, continuing declines first reported in 2019, before the pandemic,” said a Jan. 29 statement from the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES), which administers the tests. An armed suspect took a bus driver hostage in Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday, resulting in a large standoff and the deployment of the Portland Police Bureau’s (PPB) emergency reaction and crisis negotiation teams. The incident began around 12:15 pm local time in the Old Town neighborhood. The suspect was taken into custody around 3:44 pm. National Security Advisor Mike Waltz confirmed on Thursday that at least 30 bodies have been pulled from the Potomac River after a Black Hawk helicopter collided with a commercial Bombardier airplane on Wednesday night over Reagan International Airport (DCA) in Washington, DC. The search and rescue mission turned to a recovery mission at 4 am on Thursday morning as no survivors were found. Passengers were found under water still strapped to their seats.
