SPRAGUE RIVER, Ore. (KTVZ) — The Bootleg Fire that broke out earlier this week on the Fremont-Winema National Forest nearly doubled in size yet again on Friday, to nearly 77,000 acres, and Klamath County officials expanded the evacuation zones as a result.

The Bootleg Fire continues to burn on the Fremont-Winema National Forest and on private lands. Hot and dry weather conditions have continued overnight and are forecast through today. Freemont County, CO — Imagine making a flippant comment to an individual and then having your world become a living nightmare as a result. One would think, in a free society, the things we say couldn’t possibly turn into a rights-violating and utterly torturous encounter with police but that is precisely what happened to Carolyn O’Neal of Fremont County, Colorado.

The Canyon City Police of the Fremont County Sheriffs Department got a call from O’Neal’s substance abuse and recovery center (where she was living in a residential setting) who said O’Neal was suicidal. O’Neal’s mother was dying of terminal cancer and she was so distraught she made a careless comment about driving her car off of a cliff and just end it all. That is it. KLAMATH COUNTY, Ore. — The Bootleg Fire, a wildfire that broke out in southern Oregon’s mountains is spreading in windy, hot and dry conditions. As of Friday morning, the fire had grown to 38,892 acres, more than doubling in size during the past 24 hours. Fire officials have reported between 0% to 1% containment.

The fire is burning in steep, rugged terrain in mixed conifer and lodgepole pine in the Fremont-Winema National Forest, about 10 miles northeast of the unincorporated community of Sprague River.

The man arrested and charged in the killing of an Indiana police officer at an FBI office had been a mayoral candidate and federal prisons employee, media outlets reported.
