Michigan’s State Board of Education has drafted a guidance that would push the state’s schools to allow all students, regardless of parental or doctoral input, to choose their gender, name, pronouns, and bathrooms.

Spearheaded by board president John C. Austin and signed by state superintendent Brian Whiston, the guidance informs Michigan public schools that only the students themselves–i.e. not their parents or doctors–can determine what their individual gender identities are.   Continue reading “Michigan Schools To Let Students Choose Gender, Name And Bathroom”

WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — New Zealand has voted to keep its current flag by a margin of 57 percent to 43 percent in a nationwide poll that ended Thursday. More than 2 million people voted in the ballot to decide whether to keep the British Union Jack on their flag or replace it with a silver fern.

The current flag has been the national symbol since 1902. It was up against a new design that was winnowed from more than 10,000 entries submitted by the public. Those advocating change argued the flag was a relic of the nation’s colonial past and too similar to Australia’s flag.   Continue reading “Fern spurned: New Zealanders vote against changing flag”

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — A University of California committee agreed Wednesday to single out anti-Semitism as a form of intolerance that campus leaders should challenge but rejected a more far-reaching denouncement of arguments against Israel’s right to exist.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Bob Ebeling spent three decades filled with guilt over not stopping the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, but found relief in the weeks before his death. Ebeling’s daughter Leslie Serna told The Associated Press that her father died Monday at the age of 89 in Brigham City, Utah.

She said he was finally able to forgive himself thanks to the hundreds of supportive phone calls and letters he received following a January NPR story about the 30th anniversary of the Challenger disaster. She said they tried to ease Ebeling’s guilt, and he was soon able to let go.   Continue reading “Man who predicted space shuttle Challenger disaster dies”

Apparently, it’s not enough that UND’s administration is attacking the quality of education by cutting programs and experienced faculty and jacking class sizes. Now, we must also feel under physical attack as well.

I look up from my office computer to see two figures in camo with guns outside my window. My first thought is for my students’ and my safety: I grab my phone, crawl under my desk and call 911. The dispatcher keeps me on the line until someone can see if ROTC is doing maneuvers.   Continue reading “Military maneuvers startle already-stressed UND campus”

What started as a ticket for making an illegal left turn ended up with a Georgia teenager spending five days in a county jail. That’s because 19-year-old Kevin Thompson couldn’t quickly pay $838 in fines and fees related to the traffic offense.

Thompson described his time in jail “as the worst in his life,” said Nusrat Choudhury, the American Civil Liberties Union attorney who represented the teen in filing a federal lawsuit.

DALLAS — There’s no doubt that Dallas police Sgt. Stephen Baker gave testimony that wasn’t true last year in a DWI case.

In court, Baker testified Marcial Salazar ran a red light, giving him the probable cause to stop Salazar during a traffic stop on July 2012. However, dash cam video showed it was actually the officer who ran the red light, indicating that Salazar had to have had the green light.   Continue reading “Dallas officer lied under oath, never charged”

North Carolina’s governor on Wednesday signed into law a measure that blocks local governments in the state from enacting ordinances to allow transgender people to use public bathrooms that match their gender identities.

Emergency patrols, beefed up security at transport hubs and a heavier armed police presence have become the new reality in Europe, following the deadly Brussels attacks.

The Netherlands’ National Coordinator for Security and Counter-Terrorism (NCTV) agency said on Wednesday that Dutch military police would carry heavier arms to ensure the security of ‘high-risk sites’ such as government buildings, parliament, Jewish institutions and major transit hubs and border crossings.
