Several hundred people smashed up storefronts, torched American flags and harassed motorists in Portland, Oregon, following a brief lull in nearly nightly riots due to wildfires tearing through the state.

Around 200 demonstrators marched through the city on Saturday night, with some individuals smashing windows and applying graffiti on buildings. A bank, a restaurant and a Starbucks coffee shop were among the businesses targeted, the Portland Police said in a statement. No arrests were made, but the acts of vandalism are under investigation. LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WDRB) — Joe Bishop was still in disbelief the day after three customers were killed in a shooting at his restaurant, Bungalow Joe’s Bar and Grill.

“I didn’t think I’d be scrubbing blood off my patio on a Saturday morning,” Bishop told WDRB News. “I thought I was getting ready for everybody to watch the ballgame.” Continue reading “Bungalow Joe’s owner in disbelief after 3 men killed in ‘totally random’ shooting at restaurant”

Federal agents intercepted a package addressed to President Donald Trump earlier this week that was later discovered to contain ricin, a deadly substance for which there is no available antidote, according to reports from multiple news outlets.

Citing law enforcement officials, CNN reports that the substance was confirmed to be ricin with two tests, and the FBI and Secret Service are conducting an investigation. (Other news outlets have said the substance was in a letter or envelope, not a package).  Continue reading “Reports: Feds Intercepted Package With Ricin Addressed To President Trump”

When the idyllic upstate city of Hudson, New York, launches its basic-income pilot program in late September, it will become one of the smallest U.S. cities to embrace a policy once seen as far-fetched or radical.

“Basic-income” programs — designed to dole out direct cash payments to large swaths of people, no strings attached — were, until earlier this year, largely the realm of Washington, D.C., policy wonks and West Coast futurists. Continue reading “Momentum for Basic Income Builds as Pandemic Drags On”

Trenchers, the last few days the energy has felt stuck, I mean at a standstill. I’m just writing to say I wish us all strength to keep going and to keep standing strong against the tyranny that every day finds more and more ways to ruin life. So maybe this is an un-asked-for pep talk; maybe ’cause it’s one I need myself.

I made myself remember what we’re doing here (fighting evil) and that made me see who we are (good people), good people who have an absolute right to freedom and therefore to be the navigators of our own lives. Continue reading “Us”

The Great Recession

All three major stock-market indices completed three consecutive weeks of falling today as we head into fall next week. The NASDAQ, as you see in the opening graph, has set up a clear trend of perfectly aligned closings this week.

This summary of the market in September — the bullseye for my target dates for the market’s big fail — will be short but sour, as I try to focus my writing time on my next Patron Post. I just could not resist commenting on this week’s decisive market close. Continue reading “Stocks are Falling into Fall”

Trump aides and CDC loyalists are at war over the CDC’s handling of COVID reports. Charges; counter-charges. [1]
