Fire departments are ‘going dark’ and becoming secret public safety organizations

MassPrivateI

Across the country fire departments in ConnecticutGeorgiaTennesseeNorth Carolina and Illinois have begun encrypting their radio transmissions, effectively turning them into secret public safety organizations.

The latest fire department to ‘go dark’ and hide its communications from the public is the Denver Fire Department in Colorado.

The Denver Post reported that once the fire department learned that they could no longer communicate with the Colorado Police Department which also went dark; they decided they had to do the same thing.

Fire department spokesman Greg Pixley said, “that the fire department was not planning on encrypting its channels, but said that the department later learned it would need to do so to facilitate easy communication with police. It’s difficult to switch between encrypted and unencrypted channels.”

A 2016 Homeland Security report titled “Considerations for Encryption in Public SafetyRadio Systems” has served as a blueprint to turn police and fire departments into secret public safety organizations.

The report reads like a who’s who of federal agencies helping public safety organizations go dark.

On page 2 of the report the Federal Partnership for Interoperable Communications which is a Homeland Security organization, thanked four different Homeland Security organizations for their help.

“The Federal Partnership for InteroperableCommunications wishes to acknowledge the valuable input of the following groups and organizations: Department of Homeland Security OneDHSEmergency Communications CommitteeSAFECOM Emergency Response Council, the National Council for Statewide Interoperability Coordinators and the DHS SouthwestBorder Communications.”

How is that for redundancy? Thank yourself four times for helping turn public safety into a national secret.

Why does Homeland Security want to create a secret first responders communications network?

FirstNet secretly uses facial recognition and Iris scanning

Two years ago, I reported that the national first responder communications network called FirstNet, secretly uses facial recognition cameras to spy inside homes and businesses.

“What’s envisioned is allowing residents and business owners the option of allowing their alarm companies to share the live feed when an alarm goes off”, Houston County sheriff’s Capt. Ricky Harlowe, 911 center commander said.

According to a 2017, FirstNet ‘policy brief‘ the company plans to help police identify criminal suspects through facial biometrics and Iris scanning technologies. What’s more, first responders have been secretly identifying alleged extremists since at least 2014.

If you think it was hard to get FOIA documents from police and fire before, just wait until all communications are re-classified as a government secret.

A Forsyth County News article warned that turning police and fire departments into secret organizations has long-term First Amendment implications.

Richard T. Griffiths, president of the Georgia First Amendment Foundation warned that public trust in police and fire officials will suffer.

“A big part of what’s happening in the community is understood from that radio traffic. Particularly for journalists, it’s a vital way of being able to track down major events when they’re happening Griffiths said.”

He also said that fire departments never broadcast people’s social security numbers and other private information over the airwaves.

“They’re not putting the name and Social Security number out there. They’re going to say, ‘He’s a 6-year-old white male who is suffering chest pains,” Griffiths said.

The City of Virginia Beach is considering encrypting fire department and school communications!

“Radio encryption should be available for use by schools, fire department, sheriff’s office, local military liaisons, and other agencies providing mutual aid.”

Dallas, Texas wants to encrypt fire department and water utility communications.

Welcome to the brave new world of secret public safety communications.

Fire and police departments give new meaning to “Secret Santa”

Thanks to DHS, police and fire department Secret Santa’s will never be the same. Because in the not too distant future the only way for citizens to found out about what is happening in their communities will be through police and fire department spokespersons.

  1. I think my local Sheriffs have done this too , used to be able to listen in on an app on my phone til recently

and how I think they do it , is split frequencies ..so like between the normal radio frequencies is where they are at.. someone smart enough about that technology will still be able to seek it out ..just takes time

like the ol chase of radar detectors and radar guns the cops buy .. they just keep upping the anti

and why would they be hiding their actions if there is nothing nefarious about their actions ?

  2. Fire departments are installing DHS ‘terrorism warning sirens’ near schools (2017)

The war on terror, just keeps getting more and more ridiculous every year. Nothing says BS, quite like spending taxpayer dollars on Homeland security sirens designed to scare everyone.

DHS is giving fire departments hundreds of thousands of dollars to install fear-inducing sirens across the country.

The program is called the ‘Homeland Security Grant Program Warning Sirens Project’ or the ‘Hazard Mitigation Grant Program’ (HMGP). DHS’s ‘terror siren project’ is also called the ‘Notification/Early Warning Siren Sustainment Project’.

“The award of federal hazard mitigation funds is instrumental in ensuring the residents of Genesee County will remain safe during an emergency,” said Capt. Chris A Kelenske of the Michigan State Police Emergency Management and Homeland Security Division (MSP/EMHSD). “This mitigation project is a positive example of local, state and federal agencies working together to prepare for and respond to all hazards.”

“HMGP provides grants to state and local governments to implement long-term hazard mitigation measures. Through HMGP, FEMA will pay 75% of the $512,100 eligible project cost. The remaining 25% of the funds, $133,375, will be provided by Genesee County, in Illinois.”

If violent crime is at an all-time low why do we need ‘terror sirens’?

Fire Departments are installing ‘terror warning sirens’ near schools

A recent article in the Dayton Daily News revealed that fire departments are installing DHS terrorism warning sirens near schools.

“The new sirens would be located near South Main Street and Interstate 70 and near Northmoor Elementary School.”

“Once installed, Englewood citizens will have the most comprehensive siren alerting system in the country,” Fire Chief E. Bergman Jr.,Bergman said.

Are ‘terror sirens’ being installed near schools to keep people in fear?

    1. Yes, they have to keep us perpetually petrified.

I just told myself that every time I feel fear I should identify who put it there. Bastards!!
