Florida Board of Health suspends hundreds of health care licenses over student loan defaults

LAKELAND, Fla. (WFTS) — Nearly 1,000 health care workers have lost their license to practice in Florida because they can’t repay their student loans – a new crackdown potentially putting hundreds out of work, the I-Team found.

The move to suspend health care licenses comes after federal student loan companies spent years lobbying states to adopt laws to punish those who default on student loans by taking away their professional licenses.

But an ABC Action News review found Florida is the only state enforcing those laws.

Investigative Reporter Adam Walser uncovered the state’s Board of Health suspended more than 900 health care licenses – including professional certifications for registered nurses, Certified Nursing Assistants, pharmacists and opticians – in the just the past two years alone.

  1. “… to punish those who default on student loans by taking away their professional licenses.”

So, they’re taking away their ‘license to kill’?

I don’t see that as a problem, myself.

  2. someone I know didnt get their tax return money this year due to a student loan not yet paid off..and or not deferred , and the family is in some real tight financial issues right now and could really use that money

no payment options , they didnt even notify..check just didnt show up

i know , different subject , but a lot of people are out there suffering and when they thought their rent would be paid by the return for the next few months and some food in their mouths , it came as a major let down

Im not sure what the right answer is ,, but this scenario sounded pretty shitty to me

I also see what #1 is saying

  3. #1’s comment aside, it seems the “government” isn’t interested in getting their money back on the “loans”. By yanking these licenses they have stopped the people’s ability to earn money and repay.
    What they want is control.

    1. Unfortunately, Mark, as I understand it, student loans cannot be discharged through bankruptcy, you have them for life.

This will cause a shortage of healthcare workers, which will do two things; 1) As Bud said, more control and 2) Raise the cost of healthcare, hurting those most unable to pay and the uninsured
