During the making of this movie it was decided that Lee Marvin would sing this number and he cried out :” I can not sing” and he was right he had not a singing voice. Despite this they put it in anyway and it became a hit sold millions and he got the academy award for his role. His story is on You Tube under What happened to Lee Marvin and its great.
I LOVE this movie AND I love this song. I was only 11 when it came out, but I’ve watched it every time it’s come on TV. I don’t watch that much TV any more, so this is one movie I added to my collection – VHS!! LOL
The funny thing, I was JUST thinking about this movie last weekend, talking about it with my mom (the movie buff who got me interested in old movies, westerns, etc) while having our Thanksgiving meal. I’ve been playing the song in my head ever sense.
I watched the clip on ‘Whatever happened to Lee Marvin’ – sad in some respects, but so many of the old actors did have troubled times in their lives.
Too bad he’s gone, like so many of our hero’s and icons. What an actor and what a character.
