The massive Bootleg wildfire in southeastern Oregon is spreading at a rate of 1,000 acres every hour with smoke and heat from the massive blaze is  so intense that giant ‘fire clouds’ are being created overhead.

The Bootleg Fire is now the largest wildfire burning in the U.S. at 241,496 acres, or 377 square miles — larger than the area of New York City — with active flames surging along a front 200 miles long. The inferno is just 7% contained. A federal judge in Texas on Friday ordered the Biden administration to halt a program that shields undocumented immigrants brought to the United States as children from deportation.

District Judge Andrew Hanen’s split order doesn’t affect current recipients of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program, but it stops the Department of Homeland Security from approving any new applications. The decision comes amid a government backlog of thousands of first-time DACA applicants who were waiting to be approved. California is poised to create the nation’s first state-funded program making guaranteed-income payments to some residents after lawmakers unanimously passed a bill calling for the monthly checks.

The state House and Senate passed the legislation unanimously on Tuesday. It would provide funding for monthly payments of between $500 and $1,000 to pregnant women and young adults who formerly lived in foster homes. The bill will become law, earmarking $35 million for the program in its first year, if Governor Gavin Newsom signs it as expected. Four law enforcement officers were shot and one was killed by a suspect barricaded in a home in Levelland, Texas.

Levelland police officers came under fire at about 1 p.m. Thursday from a person who was locked and barricaded inside a home, police said. They had previously received a call from a citizen who said their neighbor was “acting strange and appeared to be walking around with a large gun,” police said. The Lubbock County Sheriff’s Office SWAT Team was called to assist Levelland police officers at 2:15 p.m. local time.
