Police in states across the U.S. have increasingly been employing new methods to search unsuspecting motorists’ vehicles. First came the DUI checkpoints, then the insurance checkpoints, and driver’s license checkpoints. Now, in the Land of the Free, a growing new trend is emerging — Americans will be forced to go through “firewood” checkpoints.

The public reasoning for these checkpoints is state firewood quarantine programs, which prohibits residents of the invasive insect-infected areas, to transport untreated firewood outside that area. It’s full of antimicrobial compounds to protect the tree’s wound from bacteria and fungi, and it’s naturally adhesive so that it stays put on a tree wound. It’s also a natural sealant, to prevent the tree from losing moisture through the wound.

In 2002 the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit said that the lawful use of deadly force by the police may be ruled unlawful if the police themselves “created the need to use force” by acting in an illegal manner. “Where an officer intentionally or recklessly provokes a violent confrontation, if the provocation is an independent Fourth Amendment violation,” the 9th Circuit held in Billington v. Smith, the officer “may be held liable for his otherwise defensive use of deadly force.” Otherwise known as the “provocation doctrine,” this legal standard has served as an important check on overreaching law enforcement tactics. TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) – U.S. Border Patrol agents rescued a migrant who was found in the southern Arizona desert after he called 911 to report being lost and severely dehydrated.

The St. Louis Police Department has decided to sell 27 of its historic and valuable Thompson submachine guns in an effort to raise the funds necessary to purchase new duty firearms for its officers, according to a report from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

More commonly known as “Tommy guns,” Thompson submachine guns were chambered in 45 ACP and used by both gangsters and law enforcement in the early twentieth century.
