State Supreme Court Justice John L. Michalski died by suicide at his Amherst home Tuesday, several sources confirmed, 12 days after police executed a search warrant there.
Defense attorney Terrence M. Connors told The Buffalo News he received a call about the death late Tuesday morning and has been with the family at the Michalski home since.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said he wants his country to become a “‘big Israel’ with its own face” after the Russian invasion ends, stressing that security would likely be the main issue in Ukraine during the post-war period.

Inflation poses severe challenges for emerging market economies. The latest example is in Peru, where social unrest spreads across the country, forcing the government to impose a curfew in the capital, Lima, on Tuesday, according to Reuters.

Civil asset forfeiture is a pernicious policy in its own right. It is nothing more than legalized, institutionalized, government-sanctioned theft. The Democrats on Monday agreed to spend $10 billion in “emergency” pandemic funding while ending Title 42—which prohibits the entry of immigrants who pose health risks.
The $10 billion package would fund the purchase of more coronavirus tests, vaccines, and supplies to further fight the Chinese coronavirus, the Washington Post reported. The costly package was agreed to by establishment Republicans, including Sens. Mitt Romney (R-UT), Roy Blunt (R-MO), and Richard Burr (R-NC). Prescribed fire season has arrived at Crater Lake National Park and staff will be applying prescribed fire to the landscaping in preparation for the upcoming fire season.
Marsha McCabe of the National Park Service said hand thinning of small trees and brush, and brush pile burning this material with prescribed fire is commonly used by fire managers to not only improve forest health and wildlife habitat but also provide defensive space around structures and escape routes in the event of a wildland fire. McCabe said these techniques are part of the agencies continued commitment to protecting park visitors and employees, as well as the park’s valued natural and cultural resources from wildland fire. April 4 (UPI) — The Supreme Court on Monday ruled that victims of false or fabricated evidence on the part of police can hold the government accountable for those actions through civil suits against officers.
The high court, in a 6-3 decision, ruled that Larry Thompson of Brooklyn, N.Y., a U.S. Navy veteran and Postal Service worker, can sue the New York Police Department for damages after he was falsely arrested and jailed eight years ago in connection with a report of child abuse.
