Update as of 5:03 a.m.: All schools in the Bethel School District will start two hours late Monday due to the investigation in the area. The district said their bus facility is blocked by the ongoing search for the second suspected burglar.
Update as of 4:43 a.m.: The fallen deputy has been identified as Daniel A. McCartney, 34, of Yelm.
More than a dozen law enforcement officers from various agencies lined up outside St. Joseph Medical Center early Monday as McCartney’s body was brought outside in a coffin draped in a flag and loaded into the Medical Examiner’s van.
From here on out, his body will never be left alone. The Honor Guard and fellow deputies will stand watch.
Initial post: A Pierce County sheriff’s deputy was shot and killed late Sunday while chasing two burglars in the Frederickson area.
It was about 11:25 p.m. when deputies were called to a home in the 5100 block of 200th Street East for a home invasion.
During the 911 call, dispatchers said they could hear screaming and the sounds of a scuffle.
A deputy arrived six minutes later and gave chase as the burglars ran, sheriff’s spokesman Ed Troyer said.
Three minutes later, shots rang out.
The deputy suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma. He died just after 2 a.m.
It’s unclear whether he was able to return fire.
One suspected burglar was found dead near the home about 1:30 a.m. A handgun was recovered. The other suspect is on the run.
Deputies were doing a K-9 track in the area and closed 176th Street East to 200th Street East, and 38th Avenue East to Canyon Road East.
Drivers were asked to avoid the area and residents were asked to stay inside their homes.
“All of us are deeply concerned,” Sheriff Paul Pastor said. “Our deputy has been critically injured as a consequence of doing his job and courageously putting himself in harm’s way.”
The deputy, who has not been identified, was hired in 2014 and lived in Yelm. He leaves behind a wife and three sons.
After the deputy died, law enforcement officers from various agencies stopped by the hospital to give their condolences to the crowd of deputies who gathered in the emergency room after the shooting.

“As you sow, so shall you also reap.”
Civilian deaths still out weigh those of thugs!
Oh, how the times have changed.
Back in 2009 when 4 cops were shot and killed at a coffee shop in nearby Lakewood, I expressed the same sentiments as y’all did.
Not many positive responses did I get, mostly disparaging remarks and lots of negativity. That was then, just as the war on civilians was ramping up.
I agree with your message.
“….He leaves behind a wife and three sons….” (all of whom are happy that the lunatic is finally out of their lives)
Maybe those burglars would have been more likely to give up peacefully if they didn’t have good reason to believe that doing so would result in them getting a vicious beating (possibly causing brain damage or other life-changing injuries) and/or being delivered to a prison in which part of the unofficial sentence is sexual assault.
So, pigs, learn this if your tiny brains will allow it: Every time you use excessive force on someone who has given up peacefully, you make it more likely that the next guy will not surrender, but will fight back with everything he has. The same applies to corrections officers who turn a blind eye to prison rape or other inmate violence.
“The other suspect is on the run.”
HOPE HE SMOKES A HALF DOZEN MORE!!!!!!
“After the deputy died, law enforcement officers from various agencies stopped by the hospital to give their condolences…”
Meanwhile… WE CELEBRATE!!!
