San Bernardino shooting: At least 14 people killed; one suspect down

CNN Updated 7:48 PM ET

Hundreds of police officers swarmed a six-block area of San Bernardino in pursuit of as many as three suspects who authorities say gunned down 14 people at a center for people with developmental disabilities.

Witnesses said the gunmen fled the scene of a shooting in a black SUV. Hours after the shooting, police traded gunfire with people in a vehicle.

One suspect went down, police said. Another was being “handled,” Sgt. Vicki Cervantes told reporters. One more suspect could still be on the loose, she said.

Aerial images from CNN affiliates showed the scene flooded with officers and cars. A CNN producer saw police going house to house and residents were told to stay inside with their doors locked.

Two armored trucks approached a black SUV with the windshield full of bullet holes. A person could be seen on the ground not moving, with a long gun by his side.

Several miles away, at the Inland Regional Center, authorities finished clearing the three buildings on the property and examining the conference center, where the initial shootings occurred.

  1. Has anybody notice the change in terminology from assault weapon to “long gun”. This will be used to come after all rifles not just semi auto rifles.

    1. Ryan & I were talking about that. I’ve seen it called a rifle or AR in the articles (so far), but no mention of the fearsome ASSAULT RIFLE yet.

      Strange, that.

  2. “Another was being “handled,” Sgt. Vicki Cervantes told reporters.”

    wow… “being handled”?

Interesting choice of (infinitely malleable) words.

I take that to mean that his handler had arrived on the scene, and that he was under control.

    In your face?
