Over the past few months, my husband and I have kept an eye on the store shelves in our area. We don’t shop daily or even weekly, but the trend of increasingly bare shelves has been incredibly disturbing. This made me curious as to what others have been experiencing. As a member of various online prepping communities, I see a lot of conversations and concerns, but one thing that has stood out to me is the amazing number of people chiming in to report sparse or bare shelves or just not being able to find a specific item they like.
We visited many different stores.
Over several months we visited various regional and national grocery stores, drug stores, and dollar store chains.
You may be able to guess where these pictures come from but I am not going to mention store names because I fear that by doing so I will contribute to a damaged reputation for these stores. I don’t want to affect the financial well being of the hardworking families that rely on their employment with these stores.
The main grocery warehouse for a major regional chain is quite close, and they are a well-capitalized company with no significant financial difficulties, but even they seemed to have problems keeping some items on the shelf.
Here are the most commonly out of stock or in short supply items.
The pictures in this article were not taken during snowstorms. They were taken during a typical shopping day in the winter time in the USA. My husband and I wanted to make sure that snow was not making the results worse than they actually are. This research is intended to inform, not foster unwarranted fears.

I have no idea what this woman is talking about. Our stores here in the NW suburbs of Chicago are stocked to the rafters, no bare shelves, no shortage of anything.
SAME IN OKC BILL. BARE SHELVES ARE AN ON/OFF THING
I am having a hard time finding salt free beef broth but I attribute that to the supply kept on hand….way less than the reduced sodium and regular beef broth
Same here in central Va the shelves are full and the only things that run out are milk and bread when they call for snow and that’s been the case for 40yrs since I worked in a small store in high school…… what is she talking about bare shelves?

My wife and I shop in two different grocery stores
One a bigger chain than the other
Even the little local grocery market is always well stocked
Even when the threat of bad weather is shoved in our face and other stores are experiencing low volumes
Ours is still well supplied
Than again shitty weather is the norm here , so maybe we’re just better prepared?
Fear porn?
Only time any grocery store out here (twenty or more miles from our house in the woods) has empty shelves is when it’s the day before deliveries (esp. Killer Dave’s organic raisin bread).
Empty shelves is becoming a problem in Britain as big stores turn to self-service tills, then they lay-off so many staff there’s not enough workers to restock the shelves. It’s not stock that’s our problem it’s under-staffing.
Damn ammo shelves are empty everytime they have a big sale. Plenty of reload powder and primers though.
Our grocery shelves tend to get holes after the weekend as they resupply on tuesday. Its always the sale items that are gone. The rest of the store is packed with useless fda approved sh!t.
