KHQ 06 News – by Robin DichUPDATE: A dozen law enforcement officers who exchanged gunfire with an Arizona man during a chase on Interstate 90 in northern Idaho over the weekend have been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated.
Kootenai County officials say Marcus A. Rael of Glendale, Arizona, was shot at around 2 a.m. Sunday and remained hospitalized Monday in stable condition.
Officials say Rael was first pulled over in Coeur d’Alene, but fled in his pickup truck. Kootenai County Sheriff’s Lt. Stu Miller says officers pursued him to Post Falls, where he stopped and began to shoot at officers.
Kootenai County officials say six Coeur d’Alene police officers, three Post Falls police officers, two Kootenai County sheriff’s deputies and an Idaho State Police trooper exchanged gunfire with Rael. The names of the officers haven’t been released.

POST FALLS, Idaho – The Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office is releasing further details in the officer involved shooting that occurred Sunday, June 22nd, on I-90.
The incident began as a traffic stop in the City of Coeur d’Alene, where the driver fled the scene in his pickup. A subsequent pursuit was initiated from Sherman St and Interstate 90, westbound to milepost 5, in the City of Post Falls. The driver, for reasons yet to be determined, stopped his vehicle and began to exchange gunfire with multiple law enforcement personnel from four agencies.
The driver was later transported to Kootenai Health and was initially listed in critical condition.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Marcus A. Rael of Glendale, Arizona. He is currently listed in stable condition at Kootenai Health.
The involved law enforcement personnel that exchanged gunfire with Rael included six officers from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, three officers from the Post Falls Police Department, two deputies from the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office and one trooper from the Idaho State Police. All the involved officers, deputies and trooper are currently on paid administrative leave. Their names will be made available in the future.
The Critical Incident Task Force, with oversight from the Bonner County Sheriff’s Office is continuing to process evidence from the scene. Due to the large, complex nature of the incident and to ensure the integrity of the investigation, further details are not currently available.

Around 2:00 a.m. on Sunday, officers and deputies from CdA Police, Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, ISP and Post Falls Police were involved in the incident.
The lone suspect involved in this case was transported to Kootenai Health and is listed in critical condition.
The westbound lanes of Interstate 90 from Highway 41 to Spokane Street were closed through Sunday afternoon.
At this time, public information regarding the investigation will be handled by the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office.
