WASHINGTON – The Trump administration rolled back longstanding federal protections for wildlife under threat of extinction Monday in a move that could expand oil and gas drilling and other development across America’s wilderness.
More than 40 years after Congress passed the Endangered Species Act, Interior Secretary David Bernhardt and Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross said the changes were necessary to make more efficient and transparent a bureaucratic process about which oil companies, ranchers and other industries have long complained. Federal charges have been filed against the friend of the gunman who killed nine people in Dayton, Ohio, last week.
The friend, who was not identified in a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice, allegedly lied on federal firearms forms. A North Texas homeowner on Sunday fatally shot an alleged intruder after the suspect pulled out a gun when confronted, a report said.
The dramatic scene unfolded in Saginaw, a suburb of Forth Worth, at about 5 p.m., according to CBS local. The homeowner reportedly fetched his gun after hearing the commotion. The State Department has updated the working definition of anti-Semitism detailed on its website to include comparisons between current Israeli policies and those of the Nazis. The move comes just two weeks after the House passed a resolution denouncing the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement and amidst consistent attacks on Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) for introducing a bill that affirms the right to boycott foreign countries in the name of human rights. Harvard law professor Alan Dershowitz, Britain’s Prince Andrew and former New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson were among those whose names surfaced Friday after a trove of documents were released in a case with strong ties to disgraced financier and sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
Thousands of long-awaited court documents have been unsealed in a lawsuit against a woman accused of being Epstein’s fixer, and the papers include references to the names of seedy book titles purchased by Epstein. Police in Texas are searching for a gunman who opened fire on a freeway in Houston during the evening rush hour Thursday, killing a driver and his passenger.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man who was “full of anger” went on a two-hour stabbing and robbery rampage in Southern California, killing four people and wounding two others, authorities said Wednesday.

(Bloomberg) — As mass shootings revive the U.S. debate over gun policy, the Supreme Court is weighing whether to go forward with a Second Amendment showdown for the first time in a decade.
The justices in January said they would hear a challenge to New York City rules that sharply limited where licensed handguns could be taken while locked and unloaded. Three city handgun owners said the regulations were the most extreme firearm-transportation restrictions in the country. ARLINGTON — An Arlington police officer took just seconds to fire three shots — one of which fatally struck a woman — after a dog started running toward him Thursday afternoon, body-camera footage shows.

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The gunman who opened fire on a California food festival killed himself after officers shot him multiple times, officials said Friday, correcting previous police accounts that the officers fired the fatal bullet.

MELBOURNE, Fla. – The use of force by police to subdue Markeith Loyd — the fugitive suspected of shooting an Orlando police officer to death — was justified, according to Phil Archer, state attorney for Brevard and Seminole counties in Florida.
The Jan. 17, 2017 arrest, which was captured on video, showed four police officers punching, kicking and striking Loyd in the face with the muzzle of a rifle as Loyd, wearing a bulletproof vest, was lying in the street. One person is dead and at least five were injured in central Kentucky after a gas line ruptured and produced a fireball that could be seen around the region early Thursday.
