Two Northern California sheriff’s deputies and a former colleague were charged Tuesday with involvement in setting up jail inmates fights to gamble on them.

Former San Francisco Sheriff’s deputy Scott Neu was charged with eight felonies and nine misdemeanors, including assault by an officer and criminal threats. States could no longer require labeling of genetically modified foods under legislation approved by a Senate panel.

The Senate Agriculture Committee voted 14-6 Tuesday to prevent the labeling on packages of foods that include genetically modified organisms, or GMOs. The police shooting of a 24-year-old man south of downtown Raleigh, N.C., early Monday afternoon generated a tense, impromptu protest of more than 100 people and questions about excessive use of police force.

Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown said the shooting took place shortly after noon as officers tried to arrest a man on a felony drug charge. A gunman burst into a the lunch room of an Ohio high school Monday morning and opened fire, wounding four students before officials caught him and put him in custody, investigators confirmed.

Los Angeles Archbishop Jose Gomez and other Southern California bishops announced Saturday an initiative to assist an estimated 2.4 million legal permanent residents in the United States who are seeking citizenship.

Three seventh-graders at Deltona Middle School are facing criminal charges after allegedly putting crushed red pepper flakes in their teacher’s can of Mountain Dew, a Volusia County sheriff’s spokesman said.

The three 12-year-old girls were arrested are being held at the Volusia Regional Juvenile Detention Center.

Two face charges of poisoning food or water and tampering with consumer products. The third faces charges of tampering with consumer products and being a principal to poisoning food or water.

The United States has exported its first liquefied natural gas (LNG) cargo from the lower 48 states, after a tanker set sail from Cheniere Energy’s Sabine Pass export terminal in Louisiana.

JACKSON, Miss. — A man suspected in another homicide has been indicted in the December 2014 burning death of Mississippi teen Jessica Chambers.
