NEW YORK — The public will soon get a broader glimpse at the still-secretive world of government data collection.

Yahoo said Thursday it won release of 1,500 pages of documents filed in a secret surveillance court. It said the documents stem from an unsuccessful lawsuit it brought in 2008 challenging the government’s right to demand user information.

The company won a victory last year when portions of previously-closed documents were ordered public. As it noted Thursday, disclosures from the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court are “extremely rare.”   Continue reading “You will soon get a glimpse at secretive government data collection process”

An overnight fire that destroyed two buildings in an industrial area of Bridgeport, Connecticut, and forced about 400 residents to evacuate, also may have polluted a popular fishing area, officials said on Friday.

The blaze, which began Thursday evening, sent several fireballs into the air as superheated drums of perfume and other chemicals exploded inside the Rowayton Trading Co, the city fire department said in a statement.   Continue reading “Bridgeport, Connecticut, industrial fire forces hundreds to evacuate”

The U.S.Navy was searching Friday for one of two pilots whose F/A-18 Hornets crashed while flying off the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson in the western Pacific.

The guided-missile cruiser USS Bunker Hill and the guided-missile destroyer USS Gridley, along with helicopters, joined the search for the missing pilot.

The second pilot, who was rescued, was being treated aboard the aircraft carrier, the Navy said in a statement. Neither pilot was identified.   Continue reading “Pilot missing after 2 Navy Hornets crash in Pacific”

Tech Dirt – by Mike Masnick

We recently wrote about the ongoing delays in releasing a (heavily redacted) executive summary of the Senate Intelligence Committee’s report on the CIA’s torture regime following 9/11. That was linked to a Reuters story about how the CIA and the Senate Intelligence Committee still can’t agree on what to redact. However, I’d totally missed a line at the end of that Reuters piece that Kevin Gosztola calls to our attention. It’s where Reuters reporter Patricia Zengerle decides to not call torture “torture,” but rather “physically stressful interrogation.”   Continue reading “Reuters Downplays CIA Torture As Merely ‘Physically Stressful Interrogation Techniques’”

Emails within a tight circle of academics at an exclusive university just outside Boston founded by American Jews reveal a long-standing and vehement anti-Israel bias and anger at Fox News and a human rights advocate who renounced her Muslim faith.

Thousands of messages on a Brandeis University ListServ obtained by conservative students and reviewed by FoxNews.com were hyperbolic in their condemnation of Israel, regarding the recent fighting in Gaza and prior conflicts with the Palestinians. Accusations that Israel has committed war crimes and “holocaustic ethnic cleansing” against Palestinians appear in the messages from academics at the school.    Continue reading “Brandeis faculty emails reveal anti-Israel bias”

Vladimir PutinABC News

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday ordered military forces in the country’s east to carry out a major exercise to test their preparedness.

This is a second major drill of combat readiness since June when the conflict in eastern Ukraine was already raging. That drill in the Volga region and the Urals involved 65,000 troops. In May, Russia and China held a joint naval exercise in the East China Sea.   Continue reading “Putin Orders Forces in the East on Combat Drill”

Beijing (AFP) – China and Russia will build one of the largest ports in northeast Asia on Russia’s Sea of Japan coast, reports said, in a further sign of the powerhouses’ growing alliance.

The seaport is expected to be able to handle some 60 million tonnes of cargo a year, China’s state-run People’s Daily Online reported late Wednesday — comparable to Britain’s busiest port Immingham or Le Havre in France, according to European Commission statistics.   Continue reading “China, Russia to build seaport: report”

So far, Jeh Johnson has managed to largely stay out of the spotlight and avoid much of the hate showered on his predecessor Big Sis Janet Napolitano. One example is right there, in the fact that no one really refers to Jeh as Big Bro Johnson, which is good, because it sounds like a really bad porno name.

But I digress…

Yesterday, the Washington Times reported that Homeland Security is going to release a brand new, shiny guidance list to retailers this week (just in time for another 9/11!) which will “train” them on how to watch for suspected terrorists in their stores, i.e. — anyone who buys a bunch of stuff from what Mr. Johnson says is a “long list of materials that could be used as explosive precursors.”   Continue reading “See Something Snitch Something Is Back: DHS to Release New Guidelines for Stores to Watch Shoppers”

Silver Coins – by Dave

It is unfortunate that articles like this have to be written,
but where there is money trading hands, there will always be fakes, frauds, and counterfeits.

If you have purchased some silver and can’t get rid of that little voice in your head that keeps saying what if they are fake silver coins …

Below are 12 ways on how to spot fake silver eagles, bars, and bullion. We’ve ranked them from the least to the most effective methods in detecting counterfeits. (Most of these tests can also be applied to gold as well).   Continue reading “Fake Silver Coins: 12 Ways to Spot Counterfeits”

In an address to the nation tonight, President Obama laid out his most detailed plan yet to “lead a broad coalition” to confront the vexing problem of ISIS, the militant group that executed American journalists James Foley and Steven Sotloff in Syria and terrorized civilians in Syria and neighboring Iraq.

Here’s Obama’s four-point plan to destroy ISIS:   Continue reading “Obama Pledges to ‘Degrade and Ultimately Destroy’ ISIS: What You Need To Know”

The tragedy of September 11, 2001, goes far beyond the deaths of those who died in the towers and the deaths of firefighters and first responders who succumbed to illnesses caused by inhalation of toxic dust. For thirteen years a new generation of Americans has been born into the 9/11 myth that has been used to create the American warfare/police state.

The corrupt Bush and Obama regimes used 9/11 to kill, maim, dispossess and displace millions of Muslims in seven countries, none of whom had anything whatsoever to do with 9/11.   Continue reading “9/11 After 13 years”

Recount-2The Sedalia Weekly Observer

A recount was conducted Tuesday at the Pettis County Courthouse involving the results of the co-called “Right to Farm” Amendment to the Missouri Constitution.

On Aug. 5, Amendment 1 passed by 2,490 votes, or about a quarter of a percentage point.

Losers of a Missouri ballot initiative are permitted to request a recount if the margin is a half percentage point or less. A coalition of Amendment 1 opponents — including Missouri’s Food for America, the Missouri Farmers Union, and the Missouri Rural Crisis Center — formally called for a recount. A total of 497,091 people voted no on the proposal.   Continue reading “Recount on Missouri’s “Right to Farm” Amendment Conducted”

Mired in the drought that has dried up so much of the Southwest, Texas is losing patience with Mexico, which owes the state millions of gallons of water.

Under the terms of a 1945 agreement, Mexico and Texas are supposed to send each other a certain amount of water. Texas’ share comes from the Colorado River, while Mexico’s originates along the Rio Grande.   Continue reading “Mexico Owes Water to U.S.”

Free money for everyone!

With weak job growth, rising poverty, and the rich continuing to devour nearly all economic growth, it’s an idea that is gaining more credence. Arguments for a universal basic income (UBI) — in which everyone without exception would receive an equal stipend — have flourished in policy-centric areas of the internet, including The Week. Advocates of UBI see it as a blunter, more effective means of reducing poverty and shrinking the inequality gap.   Continue reading “America is running out of jobs.
